  • In search of a rubber donut...

I'm looking for a rubber stopper that I can fit on my winch rope and mount between the fairlead and thimble when the rope is fully spooled in. Think of a donut but made of rubber. I don't want to run a hook on my winch rope and I want to be able to have it pull up the tension so I don't have to cable tie it like I do now. Thoughts...

Maybe a rubber doorstop from Bunnings? The ones that screw down onto the floor - you might have to drill out the centre to fit the cable, but would do at a pinch.

    Cheers, Dave

I have the same set up, I run a shackle on the rope. There's pictures in this thread:

Not exactly what you are after but it is another option...

Do you find the shackle damages the fairlead?

Not at all... but I'm carefull that when I power it in I just nip it up tight enough so it doesn't rattle around.

An engineering workshop would be able to make up a "donut" in a lathe to suit your needs. In a plastic like nylon or HDPE would be sweet. You'd have to thread it on fron the other end of the rope obviously but another option... Drill the center hole a little tight so you can just slide it on the rope but it stays where you want it too.

Just use a piece of large radiator hose cut into a 20-30mm section and feed it over the cable. Will pull up nicely.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I have seen most winch users have a hook on the end and its hooked up. Is this right. Or can you take off those hooks like this chap has in his picture. Total noob at this subject sorry. ops:

Re: In search of a rubber donut...

Some choose to go without a hook and directly use a shackle through the rope/cable where possible... it just ramps up the safety factor a little (one less thing in the line to fail/or fly through the air) plus it can be a little more versatile when rigging up.)

I still carry my hook in my recovery kit... it only takes a minute to put on if needed.

What about the rubber rings used to hang exhausts with under the body?

You could probably get them for nothing at a wreckers, or do what they do out this part of the world, cruise around the backblocks until they find something abandoned in the bush that looks like it will do the job.

Re: In search of a rubber donut...

What about the self retracting air / water hose units. They have what looks like a solid ball of rubber that is bolted together in two halves and fits around the hose to stop it winding all the way in. You might be able to get a solid rubber ball (think Cricket)
drill a hole through it and then cut half way through to the hole, slide over the rope and then use either bolts or screws to clamp it back together.
