  • Reverse Sensor questions...

Hi all, i have a few questions re reverse sensors

I have reverse sensors installed in my new Prado but the towbar causes it to continuously beep, when i remove the towball, its fine, i'm getting this looked at at first service, has anybody else had this issue?

My next question is has anybody installed an isolator switch for the reverse sensors, as you could imagine when reversing a boat or trailer, it could get quite annoying, it would be great to just switch it off.

    thanks
    steve

If it is the toyota factory sensors, you can pop the rear flap on the LHS of the rear of the car interior (jack flap).
Fiddle around and you should find the speaker attached to the side of the car using velcro or some other sticky item.
There should be a volume switch on this thing, I switched mine to Lo the other day and it is heaps better, High is just too damn loud!
I also ran a cable to allow me to switch the thing off when we have a trailer on the back.

I have a towbar & ball and have no issues with it falsing. Check your sensors arent dirty this causes them to go off, fine dust is usually the culprit.

I also notice that they pickup to the sides of the car a bit and pickup bushes /poles etc when reversing out of the driveway, also the road gets picked up when navigating the kerb Xover in reverse on particuarly steep gutters.

Toyota are replacing one of my sensors under warranty as they deemed it faulty at the service. Maybe have them check.

I have a black platic towball cover (not chrome) but have also driven with the cover off (chrome) *Bling* Towball and it doesnt false?

Thanks for your replies, yes the towball is chrome.

Yes i have seen the speaker in the jack flap, will have a look for the volume setting. Where did you connect the cable with the isolator switch, between the unit and the battery? i have noticed there is a cable plug that connects to the speaker which can be pulled out, i guess i can install a switch at that point...

slightly related... workmate with new Prado with reversing sensors managed to back into a post one week after getting it. She wasn't real popular with the hubby, or impressed with the sensors. Haven't heard of follow up testing to see if they're working, I'll have to ask.

Tow balls (and hitch's) do you leave them attached all the time? I open the rear door daily and there's no way I would leave it in place as it's a perfect shin killer! The chances of it protecting your bumper in a carpark are slim.. Murphy says so!

" Fool proof designs do not take into account the inginuity of fools"

                  Tennis ball works a treat.

Although I have found lately that my sensors will beep at everything or nothing.

Had the box replaced, but it may need sensors to be replaced at next service...

My father-in-law installed an aftermarket sensor system that has visual indicators via an LED display (sits on the steering column and looks original) that shows which side the object is detected AND a proximity readout in centimetres - pretty cool!

You'd think Toyota could do the same for the $500 it charges for such a lame set of audible-only sensors...

I have the Toyota ones, but didn't pay $500

Check they dont have fine dust on them as that causes it to false alarm, after 300kms of bulldust they just stayed on the other day, washed and dried them and they are perfect again.

                      Already tried that, I'm afraid.

Sound like somebody got ripped off severely on the sensors though... :x :x

Not severly, I think mine were about $100 after I bent the salesman.

Take them back to Toyota and have them check them, they replaced one side of mine under warranty after testing it, and it has been perfect since.

They should be able to fix them under warranty... if not, they should just replace them for me.

There is also another thread discussing deactivation of the sensors on page 1 of the assessories section. http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=626
