  • Installing Redarc - How & Where did you mount it?

    Gidday Folks,

I am in the process of setting up a Redarc to supply power (via an Anderson Plug) to a caravan I have on order.

After a search, I noticed a few of you have done a dual battery setup with a Redarc. If possible, I'd like info on how and where you mounted the isolator. Pix would be even more appreciated.

    Thanks in advance..

    John,
I mounted my Redarc on the LHS guard behind the fuse boxes. Redarc recommend to mount it as close as possible to the starting battery and to mount it horizontally. I used a maxi fuse straight off the battery to the Redarc, so if it is put close enough to the original battery there is no need to join extra cable in.
On mine there was a threaded (i think 6mm ) bolthole there already and i had to drill another hole through the guard so it could be bolted on both sides. The guard slopes away so the side you drill will have to be packed. I sprayed some rustproofing from the tin (Supercheap Auto) on the newly drilled hole and used all stainless bolts, washers, and nuts. Use Antiseize (Supercheap Auto) on the threads and you will not have any trouble with them binding up. I spoke to a guy at TJM in Cairns before i started and he recommended to do it exactly as i have i done it.

    Cheers
    Dave

I have already emailed some photos to John on where I mounted my redarc and how, although if some one is happy to upload the pics for me I will send them to you and they can be shared with everyone else. As you can see I have mounted it in the top right hand corner of the engine bay (as you face the vehicle) I made a little stainless tray to mount the controller on and picked up the 2 existing holes so I didn’t have to do any drilling.

      Cheers, Rhet

Thank you very much Rhet. I got the photos okay. I'm off to work now, but if nothing's done when I get home, and you're happy about it Rhet - I'll host 'em on Photobucket.

        Thanks again for the replies

          G'day John and everyone,

Details of my dual battery installation are available here.

I've also used a Redarc isolator, but I'm mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle. I've used #2 battery cable so the voltage drop is negligible.

          Cheers,

          Drew.

            Redarc Mounting

            John,

I've mounted mine in the same place as Rhetly. No extra holes. Got some material from Bunnings Hardware called Form a Bracket or words to that effect.

It has holes predrilled and notches so you can bend it. Various sizes and thickness available. Galvanised also.

Just make sure you mount it low enough for the terminals to clear the bonnet line. You don't want any short circuits

            Cheers
            Garth

I had a redarc in my last 4wd and mounted it in a way that i could see a red glow between the fender and bonnet at night so you could always see it operating at night.
              Cheers Phil.
