  • Warn Winch Control Box Mount

    Hi,

Am new to prado point. Have read the threads I have found on winches but was unable to find an answer to my question. I have a prado with ARB winch bar and have recently had a warn winch fitted. It is an older model winch and I am unhappy with the look of the control box. It appears to sit very high and looks out of place. The newer ones I have noticed slope down so that the bottom of the control box is almost sitting on the bull bar. Mine sits flat but is on a bracket that sits about an inch above the bar. I was wondering if anyone has had one fitted or fitted it themselves elsewhere. Under the bonnet? or behind the bar?

Thank you for all the usefull info I have found on here already. The site is a fantastic resource.

    Cheers

I didn't want the solenoid box blocking air flow so I fitted mine under the bonnet behind the driver's headlight. It's a PITA getting the power cables through but in the end it worked out ok. You can also see where I mounted the Warn remote.

If you mount the winch solenoid pack under the bonnet you can always put an in cab winch control so it does not require running the trigger switch through the open hood. I know several others here has done it.

          Just an idea.

As far as air flow goes, I have a bar, winch, driving lights and the control box sitting in the normal spot between the lights.
On a normal day the scanguage says that I operate at 88 deg c. On the recent 47 deg day I was driving around, both stop start in traffic and on the freeway and the scanguage got to..........................88 deg c.
So I don't think airflow is that much of a problem

I have been thinking about the possible problems with blocking air flow on my car for a while. From the pic (if it works, it's my first attempt) you can see that we have a bull bar mounted with spoties and the winch controller. I often wonder what factors of safety the designers have put into their designs? Did they know that people like me would stick obstructions in front of the grill and drive daily in the Pilbara?

That aside I have never seen the guage above half way let alone overheat the car, but i do wonder how much harder the cooling system needs to work to counter for the reduction in air flow and what effects on fuel economy/wear that this may cause.

I would be interested in hearing others thoughts and experiences on issue so please throw in your 2 cents.

              Cheers,

              Will
