ARB roof rack

Hi All,
New to the world of Prado's, but this is my 5th 4WD. I am just about to install a ARB roof rack and am wondering if people put some sealant on the bolts that screw into roof. The instructions from ARB say to just use the rubber seals. The rack once on will be staying there. Can anyone tell me how well the rubber seals around the bolts ? Am I just being a bit over the top ?

I tried the search but came up blank.

Welcome to Pradopoint Black 120 GX,

I have had an ARB rack installed on my prado for a couple of years, and I have had no problems with the rubber seals. So i don't think you need to silicone the holes.

I sealed the bolts with silastic when fitting the arb roof rack. Because knowing my luck if i didnt seal them they would have leaked and then her indoors would have been on my case. So i fairly liberally went stupid with the silastic gun. Also it might pay to not overtighten the screws like i did.

Thanks for the replys to date so far its 50/50.
Ntpryce, yes I have read through the other thread before I posted mine but nowhere does it talk about if the bolts are sealed or not.
All I am trying to find out is are people sealing the bolts. I have spoken to ARB and got a yes/no, well it depends on who does the fitting.

The ARB fitting kit comes with a rubber gasket rather than the 'o' rings that are factory standard. The gasket is much better and is tight around the bolts but I still put some silastic around the roof holes and on the bolts before I bolted the fitting kit on. Mine is a little different to the standard setup but I would still recommend silastic around and in the holes.

Neutral cure silastic of course. Sikaflex is good.

Steve, my point was you should have just re-opened the existing thread and asked your question. Not start a new thread with exactly the same title. This just makes searching the forum more difficult. Imagine if everyone with an ARB roof rack question that hadn't previously been covered did the same. :|

Well the rack is to be fitted on the weekend, and I plan to put some sealant on the bolts.
