  • Tigerz winches

Anyone checked these out yet? Any comments.

They are advertising 12,000lb winch with synthetic cable, 3 year warranty and free postage Australia wide for $799. I'm always a bit wary of winches under $1,000 but they seem to have all the necessary bits and the performance figures look ok.

I like the Premier for around $1,400 with steel cable but it's a bit much to justify $1600 - 1800 for a Warn.

I have one and have used it in "severe" anger a number of times.. Fantastic.

Strongest winch I have had before , its drags lots of heavy stuff LOL .. Including a locked up heavily laden landcruiser "Over" the top of a dune.... Thats how strong they are... Crusier was over 3 tonne and was actually my anchor point ops:

I will be buying another if this one fails as its been great so far, excellent value for money. I would suggest go for it.

        Re: Tigerz winches

Thanks people. 4WD monthly did a good test a couple of issues ago but unfortunately didn't have the Tigerz to test. The Premier got a good write up though. The Warn brand, at the top of the expense list, didn't perform any better than the cheaper winches and one even failed the test so dollar value can't always be an indicator of value for money.

At 23kg with the synthetic rope, and 3 year warranty, the Tigerz looks promising.

        Umm, thank you Mr Rudd!

This is interesting... I wonder if anyone could comment on how water proof these guys are? The price with plasma rope is insane...

i got a price the other day for some plasma rope, it was 11.5mm and 30m it was $600, almost as much as my winch, thats without the fairlead, and good old steel winch cable was still $190 bucks  cheers samo

              Re: Tigerz winches

              Hi Deeptank,

I have a tigerz 10000, I have just installed it on my prado. Regarding water proofing, I initially thought I needed to rotate
the gear box 90 degrees to install so I removed the gear box to rotate it. Lucky I did as I found the gasket between the gear box and the side
mounting bracket had been incorrectly installed and was damaged. A call was made to tigerz and after return of the faulty gasket
to them they quickly sent me a replacement. The winch has an O ring on each side of the drum that prevents water ingress into
the motor and gear box. There doesn't appear to be any other holes that where water could enter the winch. It seems fairly waterproof
but I suspect that the O rings might eventually wear or possibly suffer from heat if you where to use the winch extensively. For normal
occassional use I doubt if you would have any problems.

The only difficulty I have had fitting the winch to the Prado was with the Soverieng alloy bar. The way the mounting bolts are positioned
on the winch only allows about 5 mil clearance for the bolt threads after they exit the mounting nuts. I found that there is more than a 5 mil
gap between the bull bar and the toyota mounting plate making it hard to be able to get the winch mounting bolts tight before they bottomed
out on the winch brackets (the bar flexes in when you tighten the mounting bolts!) You might be able to pack the gap between the bullbar and
the bracket but it would be a pain getting anything in there.

Also the tiger z fairlead does not fit the toyota bar if you have one, I found grinding was not an option as to much material would have to be removed
and the slot was just to far out to align and the cable would have been pulling on an angle. I used the toyota fairlead, expensive but solved all problems.

As for synthetic, don't think it is an option if you have a toyota bar as the rope will rub on the bar if pulling on an angle due to the recessed fairlead
position. They don't recommend using the synthetic with a roller fairlead as it might pinch the rope.

              Cheers

I'm running synthetic rope with a Soveriegn bar. I had to drill and tap some extra holes in the winch cradle so that the hause could be centerally mounted. With the hause mounted centrally there are no rubbing or clearance issues.

                  Re: Tigerz winches

I brought one a couple of months ago (syn rope), haven't used it in anger yet

installed myself, was relatively easy, had a few queries and they were very helpful. Found that if I removed the rope, could slide the winch up between car and bullbar, so was good didn't have to remove it.

I have a arb bullbar, and had a issue with fairlead mounting point. The arb bullbar needs a offset hawse to suit the bolting arrangements, the tigerz only came with normal hawse, even arb didn't supply them, found a "plastic" one of ebay (exteme off limits), had to drill own holes, and was very rough cast but when on well. Also needed longer mounting bolts.

Finally, I don't like the look of control box on the bullbar, so I mounted it in the engine bay. Needed to source and make longer cables but worth it.

                    Re: Tigerz winches

                    Hi all,

With regards to mounting the control box, with the 10000lb version of this winch, if you have a toyota alloy bar
and are using the toyota winch plate you can simply turn the mounting bracket for the control box upside down, you
can then install the control box to the passenger side of the winch mounting plate. You can use one of the existing
holes used to mount the toyota control box but will have to drill one other yourself. When mounted this way the
socket for the manual control is just below the level of the top of the bull bar and not accessable unles you open the bonnet.

Not as high as mounting in the engine bay but a lot easier as no changes to cables are required. The control box
is supposedly waterproof but on my unit the have mounted the radio unit for the wireless control on the side of
control box. I assuming that it must be water proof also but have read a post on a site somewhere that someone had his
winch (can't remember what brand, start winding in by itself after going through water. On my winch I have placed
a relay in series with the winch control circuit which is activated by a switch on my rotronics control unit, I have
also installed an override to the rotronics winch switch in the case that I wish to have the alternator "on line"
during winching. With the rotronics dual battery units the charging circuit is isolated from the aux battery
during winching to prevent overloading and possible damage to the alternator.

Being able to disable the winch form inside the car also prevents vandalism.

                    Cheers

                      Good feedback there...

Any other stories, good or bad, about these guys? I am pretty sure I'll get the 12,000lbs with sythetic rope - and would mount it to an ARB DeLuxe steel bar.

Originally I was pretty set on the Premier winch, but this one 'seems' to be very similar, but at half the price. With synthetic rope!

I am not anticipating a huge amount of use, but will need a winch to tackle some of the hairier tracks with confidence. BUT, when it's time to use it, I'd actually want it to work...

                      Cheers, Deeptank

                        Re: Tigerz winches

I am part way through fitting one to a ARB Sahara bar on a 90series, I got the 12000lb with rope. The issues so far have been the clutch lever not clearing the bar. Rotated the gear box more times than I care to remember! It fits if its facing the radiator but its hard to reach from the top. I ended up spacing the winch back and now it just clears the bar.

The other thing is the hawse fairlead was recessed into the bar, no fault of the tigerz11, any hawse will do the same on a bar thats designed to have a roller fairlead thats recessed. I made some brackets up to space the hawse out so its inline with the front of the bar and slightly upwards to be inline with the winch drum...

I hate it when things don't fit properly first time. I know I can drill, weld, cut, shave, grind, join, etc, etc, but you shouldn't have to.

We have a 100 series, ARB bar, WARN 10,000lb at work and you have to reach under the bar to get to the clutch lever and you can barely see the spool and wire from the top of the bar. You can't see it at all from the front.

I'm still tempted to get one of these Tigerz though.

                              Re: Tigerz winches

I didnt weigh it but it was pretty easy to lift and fit on my own, could lift it into position and and do the bolts up with the other hand pretty easily. The suspension dropped 5mm, about the same as when I added a 20kg cement bag to the front Have added 6mm spring packers to get 20mm extra lift prior to the winch fitment.

Also, prob was not that clear in my last post, once the winch was spaced back the clutch lever is now on the top and easy to use. But totally agree, would be nice if there was a standard and every different type just fitted.
