  • Ctek 12Volt to 12Volt Battery charger

I have jsut seen a prototype 12volt to 12 volt Ctek battery charger. It is just like their 240volt to 12volt charges except it has an input voltage of 12 Volts. The agent installed it on my D4D and it registered 14.2 volt output to the spare battery and that was with the engine stopped. Should be available Oct/Nov 2009

The Ctek 12 vol to 12 volt is a 20 amp 8 stage unit. Looks and behaves as a 240volt to 12 volt charger.

Re: Ctek 12Volt to 12Volt Battery charger

Call me dumb, but with regard to electronics I'm still feeling my way.

I've never had to worry about dual batteries etc (got by with a esky) but thats about to change with the purchase of a caravan.

Now from reading, one of the ways you could charge the van battery was to use an invertor and 240v ctec to get a good reliabale charge. (a bit inefficient?)

Now this 12v to 12v would do away with the invertor and 240v smart charger and do it with 12 volts?

am I on the right track?

Do you know if the 12v CTek has battery temperature monitoring?
If it is the same specs as the 240V model, I can look it up. Is it the Multi XS 25000?

Any idea on pricing would be nice too as I am going to purchase a 12V charger soon and was looking at the RanOx.

Yes, that's right. No 12V to 240V inverter would be required.
There is some energy loss in inverters so 12V to 12V should be more efficient.

Re: Ctek 12Volt to 12Volt Battery charger

A 12V boost charger is more efficient then an invertor / charger arrangment. Though the inverter /charger arrangment has the advatage of being able to charge from a 240Vac source when available (carvan park or generator) without the need to run the vehicle.

Quality 12V boost chargers are already available for a very competative price and excellent service from an Australian company - Ranox. It will be interesting to see the price of the Ctek unit and if it has any features not available on the Ranox.

                    Is this an under-the-bonnet install?

Any pics? Well, I have to ask .

Can be fitted under bonnet, probably on top of the large fuse box lid. Looks like a Ctek 25000. Has three terminals for the connections between source battery, second battery and an earth wire. Unit switches off automatically when the ignition is off. Great piece of gear but could be expensive. Installation is dead easy.

Re: Ctek 12Volt to 12Volt Battery charger

Under the bonnet... cool! Now that is even more interesting. I was expecting it would need to be an open unit with some sort of fan for heat dissipation... much like the RanOx. Some time ago, when I asked the question of the RanOx folk, it was explained to me that it was just not practical to seal the unit due to the need for heat-dissipation. Sounds like Ctek solved that one.

$500! Not so cool. Hopefully it will reach a more competitive price upon release.

From my perspective, this means that D4D owners can now choose to place the Aux battery under the bonnet and not have recharging issues. Bewdy!

Re: Ctek 12Volt to 12Volt Battery charger

Sounds like it should be a good unit...

I have a couple of reservations though.

At 20A the Ctek will most likely get fairly warm, combine this with the temperature under the bonnet and there may be some reliability issues. It will be interesting to see what ambient temps the unit can run at.

The other is the management of the loads. The RanOx can automatically change the loads over as required. Does the Ctek do this as well? If not it may not be as easy to wire, although using the ignition to change the loads over would be practical. Remember if you draw a decent load off your battery while charging you'll eventually cook it as the charger will over charge the battery. The charger will think the battery needs more charge when in fact the load on the battery tricks the charger and can hold it in boost mode.

LFaR, you can still mount a battery under the bonnet with the RanOx, the only issue is the heat produced under the bonnet that the RanOx doesn't like. This is easily over come by not using the temp probe (risk damage to the battery), or by ducting cool air over the battery if possible. This is a feature of the RanOx and is in place to protect the battery only and is not a fault. The Ctek may (most likely) also face the same inherent problem. Charging a battery in a normal ambient temp is the best way to look after your battery, hence most guys are putting them either in the back of the vehicle or are using these chargers in campers/caravans.

The other great thing about the RanOx is that is fully adjustable to the type of battery you are using. All charge voltages and current can be adjusted to maximize it's effectiveness with any 12v battery. It also has a comprehensive display and fault management system to diagnose all aspects of your system.

(Jeez I sound like a salesman for RanOx!)

I'll reserve my judgment until we see one and know all the facts, but it sounds like it could be a decent system but maybe a little over priced.

                          Cheers,

                          Crammy
