Thanks Scotty, I'm with you. The thing I saw on the idiot box was about the Paris-Dakar.
The air filter is usually a corrogated paper or gauze. This basically increases the surface area of the filter that the air passes through. The foam filter, if you could flatten one out, has a massive surface area. They will clog easily and are designed for regular cleaning. Putting some sort of sock over the snorkel could clog fairly quickly. Some sort of pre spinner would be the way to go to reduce dust ingestion.

"When cooking on a camp fire it must be cool enough to cook on so it needs to burn down to coals, at least in parts. It is customary to drink beer while waiting for the fire to cool down.
I recommend starting with a very big fire"-Vince.
A question on snorkels? Do they provide much of an increase in cabin noise at all? I am looking to have one installed soon but the missus wanted to know if it was going to create a heap of noise in her nice prado

Short answer is yes - with the driver's window down. You will hear an induction sound when accelerating, but when you increase speed, the noise is not really noticable. With the windows up, you barely notice it. Now the question I ask you is, why do you really want it? Are you going to cross rivers etc? If so, it's a small sacrifice for the added insurance.

No, I don't think they create much cabin noise at all. As Prado BB said - you can hear it with the window down, but it's just another sound coming from outside. Traffic noise is much more annoying.
Oh, and my hearing is still good (gets tested every year!) so it's not that I'm going deaf
In regards to turning the snorkel head around whilst driving in dust, can the airtec model be turned around?
It just looks in the various pics that it sits a lot more flush to the car than the safari model.
Considering which to go with at the moment.
