  • Replacing Horn

Does any one have the instructions on how to replace the OEM horn with the dual Bosch horn units? Do I need the relay? I will probably have to cut into the OEM wires.

In the current set up, two wires go into one horn and only one into the second. Any assistance would be highly appreciated.

    Cheers.

    Re: Replacing Horn

I did the following recently, and it works wonderfully:

Identify the +ve horn wire using a multimeter.
Piggyback off that wire, and take a wire to term 86 on a 30A automotive relay.
Run a fused wire from battery to term 30 of relay.
    Earth term 85 of relay.
Run a wire from term 87 of relay to +ve terminal on your new horn/horns.

I fitted a Stebel Nautilus to my Prado using this method - a short tap on the horn button produces a factory 'beep' while a pissed off push of the button unleashes a great racket. I also used the same method to fit a Nautilus Compact to my R1200GS, with good effect.

Will this same method work for a twin horn setup? Do I have to use a relay when replacing the horns? I thought that was for older cars. Cheers.

        Re: Replacing Horn

        Hi all,

Just a word of caution, not sure about the other states but in VIC the vehicle design rules state
that you can only have a one tone horn, ie non musical. It seems air horns with two trumpets that
operate together are considered as two octaves but one tone, ie the same as the OEM, one
high and one low horn and not musical.

Having both the original horns and and air horns operate together would be classed as two tones or
musical even though they don't play a tune, and therefore still illegal.

In my case I did basically they same except removed the OEM horns and used the mounting points
        to mount the trumpets.

Also, be wary of the wiring and don't run the cabling of the air horn compressor across the face or to close
to the front impact sensors or you might have more than just the horn go off when you press the horn buttom

        Cheers

            Re: Replacing Horn

I would not have a problem with such a rule because it makes sense. Maybe they should make it a rule to have manufacturers install loud horns as OEM equipment so we do not have to change them. . . .Any install instructions with photos would be appreciated.

              Hi BAZPRADO,

Do a search for "Nautilus" under the electrical heading and you'll find a lot of info
              there.

If you still need help after that I'll post some pictures of my setup for you.

              Cheers

                        Hi Leight,

I would definitely appreciate your pics to help me find the right wires to tap into, especially given that only clips are going into the OEM horns.

                        Cheers mate.

                          Re: Replacing Horn

My 120 had two factory weakling horns. My guess is that this is a stopgap solution because Toyota has also realized that the horns they fit to the Prado's aren't loud enough. So yeah, you can pull one horn out and use the wiring leads to activate something like a Stebel air horn which many of us have done. Check the electrical forum for details, but what it boils down to is using the existing horn power lead to activate a relay. That then pulls juice straight from the battery or another more meaty power supply when you mash the horn button on the steering wheel. With this setup I also get a second or so of the standard horn before the Stebel kicks in.

the thread you want is this one http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=618

I notice it's near the top in the electrical forum anyway so you can't miss it.

Definitely a worthwhile mod. No regrets on my end.

Thanks. I will give it a shot this weekend, I might be able to do it without using the relay, I am using two horns in a manner similar to the OEM installation. Cheers.

                              Baz,
You will need the relay and run another wire from the battery. If you do not the cable is not big enought to hand the current draw on both horns and most important the NEW HORN~!!!
