I am not a big UHF user but I have one of these units. Yes its small, and without all
of the knobs and buttons can be a little fiddly to use. (Multiple keys need to be
pressed together to set the squelch for example). I have it all down pat now tho
so not an issue for long. Mine is mounted beside my left leg so its easy to reach
to play with the buttons, without having to look.
Size wise, being small you can put it more places. It is still a lot bigger than
my 5watt handheld, which has a battery back in it, so I don't think size
is an issue from a performance point of view. It also has a chunky heat sink
on the back. The mic is a bit cheap and nasty, but I don't use it much.
Sound is very clear to me anyhow, but I haven't got much experience with
wither units to compare with.

2004 GX TD; Some extra stuff... and a big wish list...
Have a look at the TX3440 - a tad bigger than the TX3100, but still easy to mount into all sorts of places. The advantage is that all the controls are on the microphone, so it's a breeze to use as the mic's going to be 'in your face' when you use it.
Just mounted one of these under my ashtray, works a treat, looks neat, sound is good but I mounted a small extension speaker next to it as well. will post pics soon.
Dave_gxl - thanks for the interest - I ended up getting a TX3440 and mounted it under driver seat with velcro and heavy duty tape. I made up a polished/stylised wooden (red gum)stand to fit in the slot/hole, rh front of gear stick to mount mic.
It all looks nice and neat and did'nt have to bore any holes dash or console.Would show some photo's if I knew How ops:

I had to make a small slot in the console so the power and coax cables didn't foul.
what antenna have you used? where is it mounted? and where have you run the cable?
I got the AE4018K1 pack, came with spring base, elevated feed and a 4.5db whip.
mounted on the bull bar, had to file the hole out a little, ran the cable around the back of the engine bay through the grommet under the brake booster.

Thanks for the info I will have a go when I get time and some pictures :?
Sounds like my antenna similar to yours, came with TX3440 pack and mounted same.I ran cable through spare nipple on rubber grummet with main wiring loom on passenger side of engine compartment as suggested by someone else earlier on the forum.
then under edge of centre console around to drivers seat.
All my info got from forum - theres plenty of good advice here.
Finally after some help from Andrew AJ120 and for what it's worth, I hope these are some photos of my Fitting of GME tx3440 UHF without boring holes etc. ops:

The radio fits neatly into the ashtray carriage.
The carriage can easily be removed using a small bent screwdriver.
There was not enough room to use the radio mounting screws
so I drilled some small holes in the carriage and used twitching wire
to hold the radio in. I may glue it on as well if it gets wobbly.
However it did survive a week on Kangaroo Island
Has anyone have one of these and the reception any good with the rare earth magnetic antenna

I have just bought this exact same unit and am fitting tomorrow. Did you have to put the dash apart to fix it under there or what is the best way to mount it?
