  • Multi-Mount winch system

    Hi All ..

I was wondering why I should carry 200 kg every day !! for using a winch not more than 4 times a month 8)

So here are my idea ..

By using 2" hitch receiver we can solve the problem

    Pic . 1

And Warn Winches provide a portable winch mount that can be fixing at any 2" hitch

    Pic . 2

Ok .. Now i can attached my winch in the rear side .. 8)

    Pic . 3

AND modified a 2" hitch at the front ...

    Pic. 4

NOW .. You have it ALL ...

    Pic.

      Re: Multi-Mount winch system

A company here called Brawn used to make a similar thing called a Port-a-Winch. Basically it was a cradle you could mount any low mount winch in. I think it was around the $500 mark. Their version could also attach to the front recovery points using straps, rather than having to mount a receiver up front. But I think it needed to be transported inside the vehicle, I see this one can be transported on the hitch.
For those that need a power winch that can winch front and back, and do not want to fit a bullbar, may be a good option.

A good idea in theory, I wonder if someone who has bought and used one could comment on the practicality.
      Cheers, Wayne

Looks ok, I would get rid of the wire rope and go to Plasma, save 30-40 KG there alone...

Overhang is the worry, I could see it getting hung up on stuff as it extends the wheelbase substantially and is quite low.

Certainly a better way if you dont use it much or have physical internal mounting area.

          Re: Multi-Mount winch system

I think this is a great idea. Why have the weight on there if you do'nt need it. Would the front receiver set-up comply with current vehicle code requirements? I would imagine that a receiver could be welded/attached to a standard Toyota winch cradle, and that there would be no issues if the receiver did not protrude past the front of the vehicle. Obviously, you could/would not drive the vehicle with the winch attached. Would it work this way?

Surely that's going to mess with your approach and departure angles...? Or do you only mount the winch when you need it? In which case where do you store it when travelling? I guess you must've run heavy-duty power cables to the rear too...?

As for weight, a Tigerz11 12,000 pounder is 23kg with plasma rope. Even a Warn with wire is only about 50-odd kg, but you mention 200kg? Fair enough, I can't pull backwards though... unless I was to get umpteen snatch blocks!

This may be dumb but i mean in an emergency if you really had to go backwards could you just run the rope under the car between the wheels to an anchor point or would the angle be so acute it would just pull the bum in the air. Sorry to hijack it is just one of those i wonder what would happen if questions that whilst curious im not prepared to try it with a 50k test subject

Two winches with steel cable plus some permanent housing front and rear (ie Bull bar and rear bar) may not be 200Kg but might be getting up towards that sort of weight. Not 100% sure.

I would have thought that you are putting too much strain on the fairhead. best solution would be to use a snatch block:

                    Re: Multi-Mount winch system

I will be looking to mount a winch eventually and this option could be worth considering. My question though, How thick would the power cable for the winch need to be when mounted at the rear of the vehicle?

                      Re: Multi-Mount winch system

To pull a car backwards with a front mount winch, you need a minimum of 3 snatch blocks.

One in front to make the cable go to the rear.
(Preferably one to the side as it will likely not go under the car) (4 snatchie blocks needed in this case).
One at an anchor point behind the car.
One at the anchor point on rear of car.
The winch cable then terminates at an anchor point behind.

This is the way to do it without stressing anything or trying to tear the car apart.. The rear blocks and angles will just reduce allowing the rope to actually do its thing. It will have a hell of a pulley effect too, so wont stress the winch ( Umm 3:1 I think?)

                        Re: Multi-Mount winch system

                        Hi All ,,
                        And thanks for replys ..

                        About the weight :
1- You need a bullbar that will carry your winch " Deluxe Bull Bar weight is between 50 and 60 kg, or 110 and 132 lbs "
2- Also some protiction under the radiator " for some bull bars "
                        3- Warn winch wights + 35 kg , for 9,000 lbs .
4- You need also to upgrade the suspension system for the additinal weights .

ops: Oops , I think 100 kg wieght will be better ,, 8)

                        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And about the rear winch usage ,,

I pull my boat on the trailer when there are low tide ,, someting like that

                        AND this

                            Re: Multi-Mount winch system

According to Bill Burke (an advanced off-road traine) one thing to consider when using a removable winch base is that I uses the OEM, or towing 2" receiver. This was strictly designed to use a combination of tongue weight and pulling through a hitch that rests in the receiver at a slight angle and the weight of the trailer causes the pulling power. When adding a winch that can be rated from 8,000 Lbs (Yes, Lbs.) ro 12,000 Lbs you are adding it to a receiver that was designed for no more than 5,000 Lbs. of rolling resistance with a combination of tongue weight. If anything fails it will be the receiver hitch and the results are probably going to be quite spectacular.

This also applies to when usig a snatch ( also called a bungie) strap. The hitch pin is only designed to hold the hitch into the receiver and not for a straight out pull. It is possible the pin will fail because it's not rated for that kind of pull. I carry a 1/2" Grade 8 Bolt and nut to secure any snatch strap or recovery point to the receiver hitch.

I know there are many out there who have done this for years and everything turned out fine, but there is enough concern to think about upgrading your recovery gear.

Good point Ben, Also a lot of winching is done at an angle, sometimes quite a large angle, and that is something the hitch point is not designed for at all
