  • ARB Roof Rack - Wind Deflector

    Team

Getting my ARB roof rack fitted tomorrow. Excited. Managed to get a huge discount ont he wind deflector if i want it fitted.
Who has one and does it lower the wind noise to make the purchase worthwhile?

Also, can you suggest any other accessories to get for the rack while in the shop ie high life jack mount, jerry can etc?

    Thanks

Re: ARB Roof Rack - Wind Deflelctor

    Hi,

Yes the deflector does reduce the "humming" but will not reduce all wind noise. Did you go with the steel roof rack or aluminium ?

    cheers

My ARB dealer said he was happy to sell me one, but they reckon I was better off keeping the extra cash.

I don't think it is that noisy anyway.

        Cheers

I didn't have a deflector fitted to the rack on my GQ shorty and couldn't hear it. Though that could have been due to the Simexs

Re: ARB Roof Rack - Wind Deflelctor

Well got the rack installed today. Looks great. The next mod will be the roll out awning. The ARB guy indicated they use a bracket that sandwiches between the metal mounting bracket and cage.

How have you mounted your awning to the ARB rack? I nealy thought you could just screw through the awning rail straght onto the rack?

                Hi wilco76,

if you choose to buy the awning, you will have to purchase the brackets to suit the rack.

Theses are another $95. I bought one a few weeks back and really happy with it.

It only took me about 1.5 hrs to instal,

                  Hi Wilko76,

I had a prado 120 with ARB roof rack (trade rack) and fitted an ARB awning simply by drilling holes into the 3 side sections of the rack and bolting the awning through these.
This worked realy well and took no time at all to fit.
Since then I made the jump to a 150 series and now am looking at selling my ARB roof rack.
I think you will be pleased if you buy the awning.

                  cheers, IFLY11

Back to the wind deflector. I had one on my roof rack though not the ARB roof rack but took it off late last year so I could carry a kayak/kayaks on top. To be totally honest there was no change in the noise generated with or without the deflector.

Re: ARB Roof Rack - Wind Deflector

I used to have a wind deflector on my old GU and also had to take it off to carry some longer items, once off i didn't notice any difference in wind noise and never bothered putting it back on. Probably the only advantage i could see is that it protects the paintwork on the front of the rack.

                          hi all,
i need you help me taking a desicion for my roofrack, i was under the impression that ARB is the best , perhaps due to the fact that we don't have much brands offered in the Egyptian market, but after searching PP , i don't see many members with ARB alloy roof rack , most are with Rhino HD bars.
                          any paticluar reason ?

although i like the following roofrack setup Toyota or rhino HD bars with Rhino pioneer roof rack , if i'm going to get that setup in egypt it would coast me almost same as ARB.

forgot to mention my favorite roofrack setup on PP is what amts done ,

Maybe because they are quite expensive and if you want something cheaper, then the steel version is very heavy. With only a 100kg roof load limit, you can't put much up there with an ARB steel rack.
Also perhaps most want to keep the fuel economy as low as possible (not sure about petrol price in Egypt), so people don't want a big permanent roofrack.
Another reason I can think off is the height limit of shopping center carparks is quite low. So the rack needs to be easily taken off or there are slightly shorter ones in the market.
It can also be a bit difficult to wash the roof of the car.

most are with Rhino HD bars
and Rhino alloy tray because it looks good I reckon.

It looks to be a great system and one where I would be happy to leave on permanently. It is fairly light and can be taken off easily. It is low profile and looks aerodynamic. With most of the planks running north-south, it won't be very noisy either. This also aids in the aerodynamics of it. The ARB rack has cross bars and this can create some noise.

forgot to mention my favorite roofrack setup on PP is what amts done
Thanks. You are probably the first to say that. It is fairly easy to put together yourself but it does look weird. It takes about 10 minutes to take off by myself and about 15mins to put on.

What will you use the rack for?
How often will you use it?
What are you going to put up there?
How heavy will the items be?
Do you want it permanently on?

EDIT: I think this is off-topic and discussion should be continued elsewhere. Maybe this thread for ARB Roof Rack selection 'stuff' and not about wind deflectors.
