  • Tyre pressure monitors

    Just seen these:

    http://motorcare.com.au/smartire.htm

    http://www.jaxquickfit.com.au/tyre-pressure-monitor.htm

Looks like a neat gadget, but pricey.

For those of us that don't check their tyres every second day (ie lazy!), it could be useful.

Anyone had any experience with these?

    Hi Grandeman
    Seen link below from ExplorOz.

    http://www.jetson.com.cn/en/intel0.asp

Derek Bester from ABR has ben given an opportunity to try some of these. They assure him the 20grams in each unit do not affect wheel balance. I'm not so sure of that.

    Cost approx.
    JET-300B US$180.00
    JET-400-4 US$220

    Cheers

        Hi Grandeman
Derek tells me he has ordered 10 sets (Don't ask me which model).

The concept of these is fine however i'm still worried re the sensor screwed on the tyre valve. Problems I see are:
        1) The units being stolen or taken for fun as they look a little bit lumpy to attract attention
        2) How much affect does it have on the wheel balance i.e. if you balance your tyres with these and then you take them off in major areas to stop theft.
        3) Technical support & parts as these are not in Oz that I know of yet
        4) Warranty, can't get much info at the moment.
        5) The strain of these on the tyre valve such as on corrugated roads.

I'm sure there may be some more things, any thoughts?

Don't know if this is a big issue - but I wonder how good the internal valve is given that the tyre's valve is permanently bypassed. Does the pressure eventually leak?

            Pete

I think you and Drew would seem to have most bases covered on the potential issues.

Must admit, the thought of it's now starting to make me nervous...

sounds like a good gadget in theory! i'd have bugger all luck getting another gadget strapped on the dash past the missus though... pretty sure i'm running out of "it's always been there, what do you mean you thought you had more leg room last time you were in here????"

that and the potential for someone to flog em is a bit of a putoff!

I think these are good for very low profile tyres, it can be hard for some people to realise they have a flat. See alot of damaged rims lately because of this. They are fitted to caprices as standard but are not acurate enough to trust so you would just check your pressures anyway.
Be a good thing on a truck to alert driver of any problems.

This is another system I saw in 4x4 Australia, on their long term test LC, I think.

                    Looks smaller and lighter 10g/sensor.

I have investigated these and the sensors are small and have a good battery life. Only problem is the TD2000A-X units to monitor 6 or more tyres are delayed from being released to the market because of an LCD screen problem. Rfere web page:
                      http://www.tyredog.zylux.com.au/td2000ax.html

I'm hanging out for when they come out to use on with my off road van.

Just checked out that site and then did another search to get a rough idea of how much to replace a stolen/lost sensor.

The tyre dog units generally appear to be about $100/tyre monitored. But to buy replacement sensors they're $129 each - on one particular site.

It's the only thing i don't like about this is the thought of coming back to see that someone has knicked off with em. and it'd only take a minute..

Agree although I 'think' they have a locking ring that uses an Allan key. The problem I see is it really slows the airing down and airing up process each time. Just have to be prepared to spend a bit more time I guess.

                          Cheers

I have used this system for about a year now, with none of the problems mentioned earlier. It all works fine. The locking ring is not that secure. You can still get it off if you twist hard enough. I don't bother with it at all, just screw them on.
You actually don't notice them that much on the tyre when walking past, so I don't think many people would see them.
They were great in the desert where you can just check and make sure everything is OK.
                            cheers
