  • Fitting genuine roof rails

    Hi all

My 2004 GXL doesn’t have the roof rail option, so I purchased some genuine used ones from Marketplace.

I’ve been having trouble fitting them tonight and have a couple of questions:

Where do these long brackets go please? Is it underneath the rear bolts? It seems that if I place them there, it lifts the racks up too much, i.e. there’s a big gap between the gutter cover and the rubber bottom of the rail.

And is this how the mounting bolts attach to the middle arm? It seems wrong to be bolting them down tight onto the paint with nothing in between, especially when there are rubber washers on the bolts. It was also quite hard to tighten and they don’t feel completely solid - there’s a small amount of movement. I’m worried I’ve got these mounted wrong. There’s also a fairly big gap between the gutter cover and the bottom of the middle mount section too when I offer it up. Looks like it will definitely cause some kind of whistling/wind noise as is.

Lastly, does anyone know where I can get a cheap replacement end cap locally? Toyota weren’t any help because my VIN didn’t give them the part no….

    Thanks!

I don't recall seeing that long bracket.

There should be some rubber gasket under the bracket which contacts the paint in the gutter. This provide a seal against water and allows the bracket to be tightened properly.

The middle leg has a rubber "skirt" around it. Have you got it? See pics in this post

See here for part numbers for the roof rail parts.

Thanks so much for your help, that’s really useful!

I do have the rubber skirt for the middle section, yes.

The rubber gasket however has pretty much rubbed/rotted off though, annoyingly.

Instead what I’ve done is use the rubber washers from the shorter bolts that were holding in the original, non roof rack fixings underneath so there’s a seal between the paint and the metal brackets.

I’m also missing 4x bolts, so going to try and see if Bunnings have got replacement. Checked today and Toyota wanted $38.20 per bolt and they need to be ordered from Japan….

        The bolts are M8.

Thank you, I ended up using some M8 bolts from Bunnings. Worked fine
