  • Bash plate

Had a bit of a scare last weekend - several sticks tried to attack the radiator and trans cooler - up through the gap between the sovereign bar and the first bash plate.

It got me thinking about a plate I saw somewhere - I'm sure it was on this forum somewhere but I can't find it again (it was possibly a link to one on LCool).

Anyways, I fished a bit of ally chequer plate out of the shed and knocked together a plate that seems to do the trick.

... and the best thing about it - it was FREE.

    Cheers

Never noticed that area was so prone to such damage until I went down & looked @ mine & damn it you're right.

The Sov. bar moves around a lot, esp. on rough roads, corrugations etc.

Does the plate have any give in it i.e. are the back bolts loose enough to provide some horizontal movement or do they have elongated holes to allow for movement?

    Cheers

      Hey Pete

I used a hole saw for the back holes - to allow for a bit of movement.

For the 4 bolts up front I've got them going through rubber washers. I played around with a couple of different combinations until I found one that gave a bit of movement but was still solid enough to protect the stuff that needed it.

Having said all of that - I nailed a stake today, in some mud, and thought (from the sound) that I must have torn it off - NUP - all still solid but it's got a nice shiny scrape mark in it now.

I reckon it just paid for itself !

        Hi Chippy

The large holes and front rubber washers combo should take the movement.
Glad to hear you have had a return on the investment already.

INFO ONLY, their are also some guys in Brissy doing a blash plate much the same as the one from Darren in Geelong if anyone is after one.
Scorpian Off Road at Albion, they knocked a couple up for my mate and myself the other day. Not quite as cheap as Chippy's but about the same fitted as it is to get one from down south.

            G'Day Hutch,

Thanks for the info. Do you have a price? PM me if you like. Just wondering if Toyota will frown upon a "non-genuine" part whilst the car is under warranty. Might call the service guys tomorrow and have a chat.

Would prefer to have one fitted to reduce the chances of damage. Just dont understand why toyota has not fitted a factory "bash" plate as such? Surely it is in the interest of the vehicle owner to be provided with one?

            Regards,

            Rob

              Two more jobs done.

A neat looking pair of switches (from Repco - with little pics of lights on them and leds so ya know when they're on). I have the spot and the spread wired independantly - don't know why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.

A pair of Repco tone adjustable horns - I've got one set fairly high and the other low. It makes the wife's Astra crap it's daks. Much better than, "mm, escuse me, mm, would you mind moving over please, mm".
And at $9.95 each it was cheaper than a big arsed set of airy horns.

I'm thinking 'Battery Tray' next weekend.

              Cheers

Rob, it was $110 fitted, i think darren's is about $115 to post up and fit yourself, i was to lazy to fit so got the local one, As for warranty i can't see it affecting anything, and the guy that sold us the car actually recommended the plate, because with his prado when he hit a roo it went under the bar and smashed the radiator.

Well I've decided I've gotta get me one of those indestructable (spell) BASHY plates.

The protection from pointy sticks/stakes and the roos that go under and squish the radiator all make good sense to me.

I'll try 2morrow and see if someone in NSW makes one 'ready to go'.
I will post details if I'm successful.

                  Cheers

I dont know if I would class these as "bash" plates. More a radiator protection plate.
Any decent rock would certainly make short work of something this thin.

The Wrx Rally car has a 10mm thick Bash plate on it and we have seen that folded in half before on rocks!

We are currently working on true Bash (slider) plates for our Prado, but due to workload suspect it will be quite a way off.
These are being engineered in Alloy to be suitable for taking a full "sump" out on rocks or a dune without collapsing.

Yeah, good call TP - 10mm ally hanging off the front of the Prado - I'd like to see that

Still - as long as this plate keeps sticks away from the soft, tender bits I'm happy - much like wearing a box while in the cricket nets

                      Cheers

                        Sounds familiar...

Heres what happens when an 8mm Bash plate meets a solid object (Bitumen).
Car almost rolled after having a bit of an off after meeting a 50 degree +embankment on a section of a bitumen stage.

You'll notice the twisted lower control arms and the funny wheel angle too!

Yep... ops: Even pushed the FL wheel back into the firewall and crushed the computer and floorpan! + Bent the chassis rails..

Would have been fine if on dirt, who the hell designs these stages with bitumen in them!

Far out brussel sprout. That puts a whole new meaning on BUMP.

                            Ouch !

I think my 3 mm plate might even have a dent in it after a bump like that   ops:

Looking at knocking up one of these radiator protection plates,
just a couple of quick questions,Is it only bolted at the front with clearance
holes around the bash plate mounts?
Does it rub on the bash plate,Vibrate?
Any one supply a photo unfitted?
                              Thanks. :?:
