  • What plug / socket for camera cable to van ?

Has anyone connected a rear view camera to the rear of their camper trailer or van ?

If so what type of connector have you used between the camper / van and the vehicle ?

    Cheers

I'm looking at putting a reversing camera on the back of our Tvan and would also like to know what type of plug/socket others have used between the Prado and van for the video cable. I need something that will survive offroad.

Places like Jaycar and radioSpares ( RS) have IP67 rated ( harsh environment ) connectors.

for example the Amphenol C16-1 series plugs and sockets would probably do what you want.
      Jaycar Cat PP-1006 Line Plug
Jaycar Cat PS-1007 Line socket or PS-1009 chassis socket. ( take your choice. )

I'm looking for a wireless camera setup, haven't found one suitable just yet.

I had a wireless camera connected into my 4.3" GPS unit. I didn't think much of it as everytime I drove past shops I would see the security camera image popup on the screen. Even picked this up from a few household cameras as well. Reversing in a shopping carpark would sometimes give interference with the reversing picture being overwritten by a stronger security camera signal.

Wireless reversing cameras are a waste of time, in my experience too.
There are so many electronics in and around the vehicle that interfere with the signal.

Friend of mine has one fitted up (prado owner) - including a camera mounted to the caravan - its wired so he can see whats going on behind him when towing.

As per what connection is used have no idea - I'll try and find out what it uses.

I suspect its a unit from TCS - usually advertised in the 4wd mags

Keep you posted - sooner than later hopefully busy at work

This is the kit I have used:

                  http://aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=CTX ... T&cat_sno=

                  http://aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=ARV ... D&cat_sno=

                  http://aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=PLA ... D&cat_sno=

as well as an extenion lead from them which I didn't see just now on their web page and I simply adapted it to suit the AV in on my in dash gps system. Works fantastic and I can check out the back of the van at any time. The connections are a plug and screw in system so they seal up pretty good.
I had the local Autobarn store order in the stuff for me and they also gave me about 20% off so I was very happy.

Hay Chippy I have put a polaris rearview system on the van ! very easy conections which seem quite weather proof or in your case mud proof
car to trailer is one of those curley cable conections seems well made but time will tell! $300 for camera 10m of cable and car to trailer conection.

Re: What plug / socket for camera cable to van ?

                      Found out from mate,

His unit is polaris, connector is similar to a normal trailer connector except it has additional wire

ie most trailer plugs are 7 wire so he uses 8 pin variant.

I'm guessing its a OEM item so might be a bit restrictive unless using a genuine polaris unit. Having said that fairly certain I've seen military grade (NATO) connectors with additional wire capability - suspect Alanco in welshpool have them

Happy hunting thats all I can say

Re: What plug / socket for camera cable to van ?

I use a flat socket on my Prado and changed from a 7 pin to a 12 pin. This then enabled me to wire up the caravan camera (co ax and power) using the bottom row of connectors on the 12 pin socket. I know this doesn't provide a shielded connection for the co ax however it doesn't seem to matter. Works ok and you only have 1 plug to connect. Only disadvantage is the 12 pin plug is a bit of struggle to plug and un plug due to the number of pins however after a our recent Simpson trip (with tvan) where the plug was sand and mud blasted the plug now goes in a lot easier!
