Re: Refrigerators... What do you have???

I have an Engel 40L Anniversary model. 7 years of High Country & Outback with no issues.
LIkes: It works & doesn't give problems.
      Hates: Nil.

I also bought a Waeco 30L to use as a freezer for our CSR trip last year, Wiluna to Hall's Creek, it lasted until Wiluna & then was just a useless passenger.
      LIkes: Cheap
      Hates: Cheap & nasty!

What type do you have? Engel 29L
How long have you had it? 31 years old, inherited from my Dad.
What do you love or hate about it? Still going, never missed a beat. Been up North over 50 times, round Oz 3 times, down every goat track in WA, plus beer fridge every Xmas since 1979
Have you had any issues with your fridge? The lid is a bit dented from people sitting on it, and its getting a couple of rust spots.

What type do you have? Engel 40L
How long have you had it? 10 years
What do you love or hate about it? Just hoping it lasts somewhere as long as the other Engel
Have you had any issues with your fridge? Nope. Engels just keep going

            Ditto Ditto Ditto
Have to agree with Daz's comments
            3 x 29 L engles each at least 28 years old and 2 X 15 L about same vintage.
For there few faults You cant go past a Engle to keep on running. May use a bit more power than the new ones but simple and reliable.
Cant comment on new fridges cause when I needed a bigger fridge freezer for my new camper I built my own 60 L.

              Type: Waeco 40Liters

How Long: Had it for more than 5 years now. Been through all kind of remote locations, without any issues.

Love / hate: Nothing in particular, but watch out for the fridge cover as some known to warp if left out on the Sun...

Issues: Getting small might need to get a bigger one...

Re: Refrigerators... What do you have???

                  Hey guys,
Back in May/ June I took the family on an 8 week trip from melbourne to cape york and back. We were right on the back end of the wet season with massive humidity up there. It was yuk for us victorians.
We took our 2 year old 60l Waeco and it ran non stop the whole time getting switched between 12v and 240v.
I thought it was the best thing ever until we got to Weipa and met two different people that were having trouble with Waeco's not getting enough power and warming up.
Following this we met and travelled with 2 other Waeco owners on the OTL who had the same complaint before finally it happened to us up at Bamaga. The problem was the same with both 12v and 240v. I was able to flick the override fuse switch and run it flat out which saved us until we got back to cooktown where the humidity was blown away by the trade winds and the fridge started to run normally again.
On the way back we met another guy at Morton Telegraph station in an F250 monster truck. He had a 120l Waeco full of meat that stopped running and he lost most of it because he couldn't fit it in his 40l Engel that he kept as a fridge. He had tried the override switch but said it didnt help. I think maybe he didn't try it for long enough.

Speaking to some local fisherman back at the Cooktown wharfe, they said it is a common problem with waeco's up there because of the humidity. I asked what they used and one swore by his 30 Engel and the other swore by his evacool, mainly because it was basically an excellent esky with a compressor that wasn't inside the unit. Apparently this means that it doesn't heat itself making it work harder, then get hotter, then work harder, etc, etc. Made sense to me.

At the end of the day Im really happy with my Waeco. It lasts 2 and a half days when camping before I need to go for a drive to charge again. It will probably work excellently in 99.99% of the places I will ever take it. But if I ever head back to the Cape, ill be taking something else, most likely an evacool.

Also, didn't hear any probs from the engel owners up there, except that they had to charge the battery pretty often, but up there you usually go for an hours drive every day anyway.

                  Cheers,

                  Anthony

Re: Refrigerators... What do you have???

Anymore information on this problem Mardi120? My Waeco I've owned for six years has no issues coping any time of year up here.

I know quite a few other Waeco owners that reside in FNQ and West accross the to the gulf that have no problems, at any time of year.

And if you thought the humidity was bad in June, come back for a visit in December or January.
