I tapped into the dash illumination for the switch light.
I suppose there is a wiring diagram out there somewhere but I never had it. Just nutted it out .
I had also lost the wiring diagram for the air comp. before I even started to wire it in so I had to work everything out in my head.

Have mounted unit - all went well. The spot you used is nice... no need to do anything except drill the holes, and the relay attaches easily. Now to wire it all up!!

      Think spotties are next.

      Will post pics...

      Thanks plucker for the help!!!

After the recent lake jasper trip with six tyres to inflate I would like to replace my chinese compressor. As some know I have the ATS side steps so I might as well use the air tanks available. I was looking at the arb compressor because of the name, the size and the in-built pressure switch. My question is this, do they have an in-built one way valve so when it cycles the motor isn't under load or do I need a remote one?
        Thanks in advance

I would imagine so or there would be a lot of busted up compressors getting around.

Doesn't take that much to bend the conrod on stuff that size

Thanks Damien. I've never used one but I think they have an in-built tank!? If so I would think they would need one. Just got so sick of dragging it around and might save a little time and also one less thing to pack and un-pack.

Changed out my old 72L/min under bonnet air compressor today .. and fitted a new 150L/min twin head unit.

The new one is a bit bigger but it does fit nicely.

I took the old unit and re-fitted its base plate and added an Anderson plug. Now I can run it from the Anderson plug near the tow hitch. I also knocked together a short lead with a set of battery alligator clips at one end and an Anderson plug at the other end ..... so now I have a very useable spare compressor in the back as well.

I have been considering permanet installation vs portabilty and you've got the best of both with the upgrade. think I better install mine for the mean time

                    Re: Under bonnet Air Compressor

Just thought I'd throw up a view of one of my latest attempts to avoid any real work around the house - moved my portable compressor to under the bonnet.

My wife's first comment was "Why?". Well I was tired of lugging yet another box around in the back that I was always shifting out of the way to get at something else, and secondly "Why not??". The airline and tyre inflator now live in the plastic box with all the shackles and snatch straps that will fly all over the place if I have a stack. (Built-in drawers are high on the to-do list)

Mounted a relay under the bonnet and switched via a Narva switch under the dash. Next step is to plumb some airline front and rear so I won't even have to open the bonnet. My only real concern at this point is that the unit isn't waterproof, so we'll have to see what happens if it gets a drink from a creek crossing or something. Driving around in the rain recently there was no real problem with any moisture in that corner.

I have it rigidly mounted on a battery tray from SupaCrap, would like to source some of those aircon mounts I have seen that have two 6mm or 8mm studs with a rubber block in between to absorb any vibrations.

Dash mounted switch, only took a minute or so to file the plastic so it would fit.

                    Mounted RHS behind headlight.

                      here's a pic of mine.

mounted the ARB unit in the ARB steel dual battery tray.

Nice set up 8608, How much is the ARB battery Tray? Does it come with all mounting fixtures for fuel filter and the like? I have a 150l unit like Chippy but have a D4D and 2nd battery down behind drivers headlight.

                          Re: Under bonnet Air Compressor

                          tray was about $120 supplied.

comes with all the mounting hardware to mount it up and also to relocate the fuel filter.

everythign is going good so far, and it have enough room, you can re-locate all your relays into the side of the tray manking the engine bay a bit neater.

the ARB tray is designed to fit a 55amp hour 10" battery. i think its better than drilling 4 holes through the guard.

I agree totally and what a great idea. My problem was that I needed the second battery.

i used the ARB tray for my compressor, and i used the Piranha tray (behind drivers headlight) for my aux battery.

Did you ever consider it the other way around? ie 2nd battery in the ARB tray and the compressor in the piranha tray?

I like the ARB battery tray idea, I've been throwing the idea around for a while but couldn't decide which tray to use for what equipment. Definitely going down this road now after seeing your pics! Still need to decide what will go where!
