Roof top tent on Rhino pioneer platform

I have just purchased a roof top tent and although my existing rhino aero bars will take it I would like to get my second spare on the roof.
The steel rack to fit a roof top weighs about 50kg and with the tent I will be close to the max. roof capacity of 100kg without the second spare.
My idea is to purchase a new Rhino Pioneer Alloy Platform which will fit the existing Rhino HD legs of the areos (the platform is cheaper that the steel rack)
With the tent at 40kg , the platform at 23kg and the spare at 28kg I will be under the limit- enough for a tooth brush and jocks up there
As I will be opening the tent to the rear I will have to overhang the back of the platform by some 100mm to fit the spare at the front.
Has anyone done this combination? How OK it the Rhino platform?

Hi Nick,

What are the dimensions of the roof top tent? It might be best to have the roof top tent wholly within the roof platform and have the spare overhanging. Or adjust it so that each is overhanging a bit, but as long as the tent is properly secured down.

The folded size of the tent is 120long x 140wide.

I am looking at taking the rails underneath the tent off and fixing it flat on the platform.
This will make a little more clearance getting into my garage- about 100mm

Considering the tent sits on two aluminium rails I think the flat mounting to be a lot more secure.
Also the 100mm overhang is not much but could be less once I get the tent and spare up there.

Going out to Sunshade Products today to see the platform and get a better idea of what's it all about.

I always drop in to see them but never end up buying from them. I found Roof Rack City to be better in pricing and customer service.

I found Roof Rack City to be better in pricing and customer service.

One of the guys who works there (I think his name is Ben but there are two Bens) will go out of his way NOT to help at all. In fact when I took a Rhino Roof Bag in there with the box that lists it as Lifetime Warranty then he didn't want to know anything about it or help at all. The other Ben is good to deal with and is actually friendly not like the grumpy %^&$ Ben how is completely useless.

Done and dusted

Went to RR City first. Not much help-took a while to find it in the catalogue-would take about a week to come in.
Price- RRR, Extra rear legs RRR :!:
Went to Sunshade Products - 1 in stock but Rhino themselves out of stock-RR City did not check availability.
Price for tray and legs RRR less about 6%-Deal done.
So then I also bought spare wheel holder - a little more discount

Not much time left today and the wife will be home soon so will put in the back shed 8)
Will fit it this weekend

A roof top tent is typically 1200 long x 1400 wide. If you get a 2000 long roof rack, you will have 800 left for storage of other things. A 265/70R17 tyre is approx 803mm.

OK I have got it all set up for an easter trip to Googs Track
The pioneer platform has the tent coming off the rear with the 2nd spare in front and an awning on the side.
With the rear annex attached I need to move the ladder a little to open the door but it works a treat.
I was going to take some photos last weekend but with the rain and grandkids :roll:

FYI, the platform sounds like a good idea to me, the 120 rails are 1400mm apart, the E-bay vendor I got my rooftop tent from was good enough to give me another set of fixings (for free) to ensure it is nice and secure. There was not much bite at the back, but it was still pretty good with just the front and middle bar connections.

Looking forward to seeing those photos Nick. Interested to know what size platform you got and/how you have it all mounted to your roof? (I'm guessing you don't have the factory rails?) How many HD bars do you have?

I currently have two aerobars mounted to the factory rails with the older style Alloy Tray but this is no good for a roof top tent and I also want to mount a second spare up there like yourself. So trying to figure out the best method that won't mean I have the bank manager knocking on the door.

Which type of roof top tent did you guys get and are you happy with it? Apologies if this is slightly off topic but have seen one on ebay (brand name Pinnacle) which seems quite cheap but quoted as from same factory as ARB. Just wondering if anyone knows what they are like.

My tent came from E-bay, happy so far, looks identical to the one on display at the local TJM just, $500 cheaper. There is a few threads on rooftop tents. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6126

I have mounted mine on my offroad trailer as well, very versatile, and as long as TJM and the like want to sell them for so much, I can easily get my cash back flogging it locally.

Interested to know what size platform you got and/how you have it all mounted to your roof? (I'm guessing you don't have the factory rails?) How many HD bars do you have?

There is only 1 model available for the 120 & 150 Prado and that is the 42102. It's 1.9m long. It must be mounted on 6 feet which is the same as the ones that come with the 3 HD bar set. You must remove the factory rails to mount the Pioneer platform rack. Refer to the Rhino website for installation innstructions.
