      Re: Safari Snorkel fitting

      Hi all
I'm fitting a Safari snorkel to my 120 series diesel and not sure where I need to seal with sikaflex.
Surely the hose clamps do the job properly. Any advice would be much appreciated.
The instructions just say that the installer is responsible for ensuring a proper seal!

        Hi George
When We fitted the Safari to the 120 series, I went to the trouble of sourcing a tube of MAF safe silicone from REPCO.
I applied this to the hoses that connect the moulded plastic tubes through to the air box prespinner. This was a pain in the proverbial as the silicone just made the job supper slippery and when the clamp was done up it tended to squeeze the two apart. I think you are correct in saying that the clamps alone are secure and sealed enough. Whoever I did use this silicone to seal the two holes in the air cleaner housing (V6 4 ltr).
        Cheers Troy

          Thanks Tony
I've spoken to the installers at the 4WD store where I bought the snorkel and they said due to vibrations etc
the clamps can work loose and they use at least 1/2 tube of sikaflex on all the joins and clamps to make sure there are no leaks!
Looks like I'll have to take it off and apart and do it all again.
Considering the amount of fun I had the first time, I can't wait to get started.
          Happy Days
          George.

Hi George, Thanks for adding this to the thread - especially as it's before Terry and I fit ours Terry, I should be able to 'obtain' a tube of Sikaflex for us to use - we have it in work and if it goes 1 day past its use by date we have to ditch it although it's still good.

              Re: Safari Snorkel fitting

              G'day George,
Did the installers at the 4WD store mention to fill the original breather/water release valve (4.0L V6) with sikaflex?
The valve is on the underside of the pipe which is from the side wall to airfilter, if you have a dual battery it will be right behind the battery.
If this breather is not blocked it could take water in too.
              regards,
              Brad

                Re: Safari Snorkel fitting

The snorkel came in today so I'm ready to fit it I see in the instructions that it says to drill the two upper holes with a 16mm drill and to drill the three lower ones with the step drill to 16mm.

I don't have a 16mm drill bit and haven't seen mention of one by anyone else installing - is this necessary or can you use the step drill for these as well? I'm wondering if they say that because there isn't enough depth behind the panel to be able to use the step drill.

                Thanks

                  Re: Safari Snorkel fitting

Thanks to Terry for the moral support (and lunch) we now both have Snorkels

I would say the biggest problem was getting the inner guard off. Drilling was easy and we only drilled the '16mm' holes to 12mm and were able to use the stepped drill for all five holes.

I really struggled getting the top left nut fitted but Terry got his on first go.

                      Brave Lads!
Have to say I just could not have drilled my Prado.
Best left to the fitters at ARB IMO.

Didn't happen - when it came down to it just did it We did both mark our own cars then swapped templates and cars and checked each others marking. Drilling the holes was the easiest part.

I'm glad I did my own rather than trust someone else to do it - I would probably always be wondering if it had been done properly by the apprentice fitter that could be doing it. At least I know the cut edges have been painted and all the hoses have been sealed properly.

                          Re: Safari Snorkel fitting

A big thanks to you Barry for helping with the tooling up and the mutual moral support.
                          It was greatly appreciated.

Trust me guys, it was check twice, cut once in this scenario.
I reckoned it was likened to removing a stubborn band aid, do it quickly and once its done, its done...especially when the wife avoids coming out side because she can hear the drill going hard against the guard 8)

I had the most fun with this install, once the cuts were finished...

Oh, and the car seems to be a tad more responsive now, especially after I removed the big clump of red crap from the pre spinner

                          Happy days!

                          Terry
