  • Fibreglass bash plates

Hey guys, I need to pick ur brains for a design or some sort of logo to put in the front section of the bash plate moulds I'm making up. Don't be afraid to put ur ideas forward even if u think their stupid. I mite be able to modify ur idea or add a few together to make somthin up. Just need some help.

I really don't think that GRP is is a good material choice for bash plates.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

How about 'tear along dotted line'

Well ud have to be stupid to think a carbon fibre bash plate for a 4wd would actually do the job. I'm doing solid 6 mm 1200 quad with kevlar center, infused.
Il make it work don't you worry. I work an test with this stuff all day, I no wat its capable of. So noones got any ideas.

When i think if carbon fiber i think of Gorilla, and when i think of kevlar i think of body armour... so maybe Gorilla 4WD Body Armour.

              That's all i got and that's why i don't work in marketing.

How does it compare cost wise? I would have guessed it would cost more than steel.

What about weight? I would have guessed a 6mm fibre glass plate would be as heavy if not heavier than a 3 or 4mm steel plate.

The cost would only be slightly cheaper, an as for weight roughly the same. As for the infusion process it uses half the amount of resin as
being hand layed an is over 10 times stronger. An for 5 mm solid 1200 quad infused, a 200 mm x 200 mm piece on end can withstand just over 3600 kg of downforce before buckling. It starts to flex at bout 2400 an can be released an it springs back to normal. But I'm going an extra 1200 an kevlar.

I'm not an expert in material science or metallurgy, but my understanding is that when Steel is stressed beyond its elastic limit and is permanently deformed it will still have much of the tensile strength it did before it was deformed.

Don't composite materials, such as fibreglass loose most of their strength once stressed beyond their failure/yield point?

I have no doubt that my bash plate will be stressed way beyond its limits when its bearing the weight of the whole front end, but because steel is still very tough even when having been deformed, its still a well suited material for the task.

That is true, but... The fibreglass has too much flex that it won't come to that in this application. There is not enough space once it is bolted in place to flex to its breaking point. I never said steel isn't the best material for the job. I'm mainly makin these plates for beach work, I still use my steel one,
But I'm sick of bashing dents out an trying to battle rust.

Again this weekend I just watched a bunch of carbon fibre and kevlar get destroyed under a rally car on the Kuitpo rally...

I have also seen WRC standard CF be destroyed a month ago at WRC Australia.. Its just not the right product for the abuse, it tears instead of sliding and giving.

Our Kevlar underbodies suffered massively from the rocks flung up at speed. Then again so did the 3 inch exhaust that got totally ripped off in a creek crossing and run over by the complete field of cars after us :-(

Rally products are made with weight reduction in mind. Not strength. Looks like I'm gunna have to do some videos up for you guys.
