  • Paint scratches and dings

Just wondering if in general people bother fixing dings/scratches etc or just learn to live with them?

I bumped into a fence, not much damage but 4 or 5 dings (5cent coin size) gone all the way to the black plastic on the wheel arch flare, not sure whether to bother (re-sale value later??)

I found a whole bunch of scratches today after having car cleaned. was sad, but that's what happens I suppose.

If you get it fixed its only going to happen again... Depends how much appearance means to you, and how long you plan on keeping the car I suppose.

I'm just glad I didn't find the scratches on the ferrari, aston martin, or john deere...

I usually don't bother about minor bumps and bruises on the 4wds (and tractor!) because they just come back in the bush. Mind you someone decided to use the rear bumper and door of the 120 as an emergency brake late last year and that got fixed in November. Noticed last weekend the nice new rear bumper has a gouge out of it at shopping trolley height.

Remember the first scratch is the toughest from then on they are all really easy!

The mother in law had someone back into her when she borrowed the Prado so we booked it in to get repaired. A couple of days after getting the quote, my wife backed into a friends letterbox. So a paid a few extra dollars to get that fixed while the car was apart for the original repair. A few months later i backed into our letterbox. That war wound will not be fixed until someone rear ends me Embarrassing way for a scratch!

I usually get the bumps and scratches done about every two years but that is just for my peace of mind.

I bought the first VE SS Commodore in my area when they came out and four days after pick up some mongrel had ran a shopping trolley into the front left guard no note left. I left it and sold it withe dent still in, dealers don't worry about these so no value in getting them fixed if trading the car.

Dents I do, I like to get them pulled out by one of those dent buster mobs. Im usually pretty careful and try and park next to a pole or the uphill side of a carpark incase a trolley lets go it will run to the lower side. I had one in the bonnet of the old prado and used to bug the crap out of me everytime I sat in the drivers seat it was there, had it taken out. I have two in the 120, only very minimal one either side but you really have to look to find it. I remember when I had the lux we did a pretty hard day of 4wdring and besides the usual bush scratches up the sides, mud, and doing some pretty serious rock hopping I was quit impressed that I didnt do any panel damage. Pulled into Lithgow Maccas and an old bloke decided to hit reverse just as I was going behind him to find a parking spot, come up over the rear ARB steel step bar (the type that protects the bottom of the rear utewell) he come up over that and slammed into the passengers side rear quarter, he was trying to blame me for being behind him, he was spewing at me !!! WTF, told him had he been younger he would have copped one. Eventually got his details and claimed through insurance, only problem was one siide of the ute had no scratches the other was noticable.........but colour match was really good.Cheers Steve

Afraid its just a case of 'scratches happen'. Unless u keep it locked in a garage and only drive it on sundays then chances are it will suffer in some way at some point in its life whether from stones on the road, careless other road users or from bulling its way through scrub.
If concourse is ur thing then get them fixed to please urself, on the other hand some people like to tally the scratches and dings on their rigs, kinda like battle scars i guess.

If ur description is right, then 4 or 5 dings should be a simple fix with a set of panel hammers and a dolly if you wanna take them out one weekend.

Think the general consensus on dings is to fix it if it impairs drive-ability otherwise its just a character trait.

              Hope this helps.

I reckon that any scratches that the truck gets from off road work are and should be, worn as a "Badge of Honour".
A true sign of Mettle. (Not metal, I hope.)

It's only the ones from carparks that gets me a bit peeved.

However, since fitting the brush bars, the car doors are hitting it now and not my panels.

Nothing like bush pin stripes as there are too many 4WD's that never leave the BLACK STUFF.

                Cheers
