No idea Steve. My rig weighs so much over GVM it doesn't matter any more, but lke any good tank it only uses 1 litre per km so the fuel economy is good

Love the look of the rear bar but concerned about the weight pushing me over the GVM. Any ideas as to how much they weigh?
Steve
Nothing like a front bar. Most of the weight is in the wheels and tyres - probably 70kg there alone.
Mind you, I used to carry a spare on the roof rack. Regardless of GVM, that would be a whole lot worse for stability and loading than attached to the chassis as it is now. Don't forget that the rear door has also lost the reason it's hinges sag...
and the rear is now capable of taking knocks (and hard thumps as you drop off rock ledges) from rocks, unlike the plastic that rips.

From what I have seen in brochures, etc, the average weight for a rear carrier (NOT including the two wheels) is 70kg.
Add the extra wheel, and there's 100kg on your tail.
I've heard the comment: "Makes the Prado handle like a VW Kombi" ...
Enjoy!
Don't think so. Front bar might push 70kg but there is a lot less in the rear bar...
Just returned from a 3000km outback trip, can't say that there was a noticeable effect to the handling. Had plenty of opportunities on fast dirt for Kombi handling to show itself, and it didn't... In fact I think it might have improved a little from the lead tipped arrow effect of a Prado with only a front bar.
In any case, I'd rather 100kg out the back than 80kg on the roof.
Weight:
Approximatley 75kilograms (inclusion of both arms, depending on model)
Also, adding one spare to the roof weighs: 27kg for the tyre and rim, and 3kg for the roof bars. I've done this for a recent 9000km trip Brisbane-Kimberleys-Broome-Darwin and did not notice the weight.
For the sake of at least $3000 (for a Kaymar), I'm just suggesting this is a much cheaper option...
I guess the Powerful rear bar must be heavier then, or maybe that is the weight of their bar on a Hummer. I have an ARB front bar and an MCC rear bar and there is no way they have the same amount of steel in them, and I think the ARB front bar is around 60kg.
Agree that if all you are carrying on the roof is a standard tyred wheel, then that is a good option. Not easy to get it up there though, and if you fit decent LT AT tyres, the weight goes well over 30kg. Add a rack, tent, etc and it is all too easy to have 80+kg up there.
Yes, Kaymar is the dearest option, but they all cost. If you use the Prado for shopping and kids duty you won't like a rear bar at all, too fiddly to open the rear door up, too risky for kids to leave the wheel carrier unlocked etc.
Horses for courses. Ideal for a 'trip' Prado, not so much for a 'city' Prado.

agreed. I am lucky to have a work car, so I no longer use the Prado except for trips. Makes decisions like rear bars an easy one. If it was a daily use car, I probably wouldn't have a rear bar, mud tires, removed back seats...
