Actually, I find the zip-tie a nuisance. When I've needed to use the shackle, I've had to cut the tie. I've used a twisty and that has worked great. Though for security, I now just pack the shackle with my straps and leave the 'naked' tongue locked into the hitch-receiver.

Working on Murphy's law, if it is on the hitch receiver and can fall off then it will, I agree with you, pack it with the recovery straps and it will all be together.

Hopefully though it won't be all together back in the garage like some people have done in the past.

Nope - mine used to be at home with everything else and now sits in my toolbox inside my brand-spankin-new Outback Roller Drawers along with my other recovery gear. My hitch receiver is blank. My 50mm drop tongue is at home with the ski boat as it has a lower ride than the camper and well, you can't forget it if you want to take the boat out!

BTW - took the beast over a weigh bridge at a sand and metal place. She's now 2.55T. Yikes - GVM limit here we come...

Anyone know what the GVM is??? I thought about 2.99T or there abouts. Maybe the wife has to go on a diet.

Finally worked out what it was!!

It was due to the installation of the Outback Ideas Recovery Points.
The mounting bolts were hitting the body mounts of the Prado on rough roads.. You can see how close they are in these pics of Chippy's.

I had mine fitted today just like the photos above. I've measured the distance between the vertical bolt and the new bolt attached to the recovery point. It's 4mm, not sure if I should give the vertical bolt bit of a haircut with the grinder or not but it seems unlikely they'll touch. Unless the vertical bolt (where ever it goes) works on different angles?? Not sure what do you guys reckon?

That bolt is on a rubber bushing? It will move quite a lot. If you look at the bull bar going down the road you will see it move a lot. Hair cut in order

See how it goes on hard corrugations but you will probably need to give it a trim.

HI just looking at this post for the first time, was just wondering who decided factory tow points were not strong enough. As having been in the engingeering field for 35 years I would say they would be strong enough.Useing the table 1\4 inch of 1\4 fillet weld will hold 1 ton.Have used tow point to have my prado + camper trailer pulled out of soft sand at one point without a problem .H.T.bolts used on your recovery points over tightened or under tightened in shear ,can fail just as quickly. As from what i can see you cannot use spacer tubes in the chassis. My 2 cents. tinkera.

Hmm, those welds don't look much like taking the stain of a snatch  They may be strong enough for a tow/pull but a snatch is complete different!

Toyota tell us that they are not rated, which is not the same thing as determining if they're strong enough. They may be strong enough, but without a rating, who is going to take the risk?

Understandably, 4WD clubs mandate rated recovery points.

                        Also see Rated recovery points.

                          • Re: Recovery Points

Hi, thanks for all the great info on the sight. I made and fitted a set of front recovery points to my 2005 prado which i have since sold and now fitted a set to my 2009 model. the fit was the same for both. i made a set similar to the OI recovery points only instead of a large slot for a shackle i drilled 2 holes and fitted a rated recovery hook. the main difference though is the way i bolted them on. i dont like the idea of the head of the top bolt being so close to the radiator, not to mention that you really cant tension it properly as it goes through a hollow chassis section. any way what i did was cut a piece of 3/4" shaft 62mm long and put it in the lathe and drill a hole through the middle and then tap a 12mm x 1.25 thread right through, then losening the radiator top bolts and removeing the bottom bolts i shifted the radiator far enough to get a drill in between and drilled out the inside top hole to 3/4" then the tapped the shaft through the hole until it toched the inside of the rail on the other side effectivly creating a 62mm long internal nut, then i can just bolt it on from the outside with 2 50mm high tensile bolts and the clearance for the radiator is still the same as my long nut sits flush on the inner rail.

Hope this all makes sense as this is my first post. I am pretty good with a welder or a set of spanners but have next to no idea when it comes to computers!

HI AJ120. Great idea you have there, addresses inner spacer problem. If I can make a suggestion, use a bar of say 30mm turning it down to say 20mm thus leaving a spigot of say 5mm on end giving you a flat washer up against radiator which will stop it from trying to pull through. Have you done the same to both :?: Just a idea you have probably already done this. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL. CHEERS TINKERA.

Hi Tinkera, If you look at the inside of the chassis rail where the top bolt mounts it is not flat and so if you machined a "washer" on the end it would have to protrude a fair way which is what i was trying to avoid. As for it pulling through that would be next to impossibe as my long internal nut wont fit into the chassis unless it is a very acute angle which would be very difficult to do even if you were trying. if you were worried though you could temporarily bolt a washer on the inside with a bolt and lock nut and remove this once the install is complete but i think it is totally unessesary. the 3/4 shaft going through the hole is an interferance fit, that is, it wont go in without a little bit of persuasian, in fact what i did was to make it so it needed a fair whack to fit in but the put the shaft in the freezer for a while to shrink it by a couple of thou then it only needed a gentle tap to go in and once warmed up again it is locked in tight as a drum. when i traded my 2005 prado i removed the recovery points which are now on my new one but the internal nuts i made were locked in solid and weren't going anywhere so i made another set for the new prado.
