    Re: My Rear door crack

I had my May 2005 Grande in for it's first service (100K) since I bought it recently at our local Toyota dealer and mentioned the dropped rear door to the service manager. He checked it and advised there was minimal room for adjustment but then pointed out large crack in the door weld (much to my surprise) and told me it was a common issue. He said he would raise it with Toyota for a replacement and has just called me to say Toyota will replace the door and it will cost me $300.00 total so I'm happy with that i guess. He said it was a great outcome?? I also get a loan car for the week and that costs me $39.00 for insurance and then petrol on top so that also helps as I need a car.

I have really appreciated reading all the comments posted here about this issue as it gives you an idea of roughly what to expect from your dealer or repair centre and what sort of cost's you may be up for.

          Re: My Rear door crack

Just wondering, cracks in the rear door, have these happened due to a particular event (such as the wind catching it while open and it 'snapping' open) or just through 'wear n tear'?

            Re: My Rear door crack

As far as I am aware, mine has not been caused by wind catching it or having let it swing all the way open whilst facing uphill, but that's not to say that my wife or daughter hasn't let it do that at some time.
I believe that the weight of the spare may have contributed in some way as well.
I still haven't booked mine in to be replaced and with xmas just around the corner, I'm trying to save the money for the Wii console, the bmx bike, the clothes, the Nintendo DS games, the music cd's etc etc etc that little miss thinks she is getting

              Another question then.

Currently it does not appear as if my rear door has a crack in it. Is there anything I can do to help prevent it by reinforcing the door while retaining my spare on it? Unfortunately it is not feasible for me to install an aftermarket wheel carrier for the spare or to put the spare on the roof.

                Re: My Rear door crack

Well I have finally put my truck in to have the rear door replaced and will be without it for 3 days. I also noticed on the book in sheet that there was a brake master cylinder recall to be performed which the dealer will also do whilst it's there.
In the meantime, a lady work friend has lent me her old beaten up Mazda 121 with 211000kms on the clock to drive.
There is only one thing I can say about the car "OMFG" Talk about going back to the dark ages.
Driving home this afternoon I kept feeling that I should explain to the people in cars beside me that this wasn't really my car but only ended up sitting lower in the seat and hoping that I didn't see anyone I knew ops:
It is at times like this that you really appreciate the refinement of our Prados and the things like power windows, air conditioning or even a clock that we now take for granted.
Hurry up Thursday, I'm missing my car already

I havnt been in this thread for a while, Sorry.

I would say that there is no real way to strengthen the rear door.
My guess is the reason for the failure is the door locking mechanism to hold the door open.
As the door opens to its max open position, mechanic motion puts load on this area of the door around the hinges. If you see one that is cracked, you can see the action easily. With a cracked door, open it all the way, then push alittle more, it opens up the weld/ skins.

                  Hope that helps.

                  Jeff.

                    Re: My Rear door crack

I have a similar problem. I have a 2003 model which I brought as a private sale and it has developed this crack running from the bottom of the door near the hinge up the seam. As I did not purchase from a dealer but as a private sale I am guessing my chances of getting any kind of assistance from Toyota are minimal despite it being a recognised fault. The latch is also a little offline also. What do people suggest? It is possible to have the crack repaired or am I looking at a new door (which I can't really afford at the moment). Thanks.

                      Hi Hooper,

My previous Prado (2005) suffered same crack pattern but my experience with repairs (even done by reputable major repairer) were not so good as follows:

Got the initial crack trying to back a low trailer with door open. ops:
Was welded up by crash repairer only to split again when daughter let door swing open whilst parked facing uphill.
Welded up again until very strong gust of wind at Ningaloo ripped door from wife's hand and split again. Major pain for rest of journey as I was only one strong enough to close rear door (ie lift it up and close at same time) for rest of trip back to Melbourne. Meant I had to get everything out of the fridge all way home  .

Got the door replaced upon my return and had no further problems until vehicle swapped over 18 months later.

Hi Thurbie or anyone else that could help, I have an 03 with this issue and want to get it repaired. Can anybody recommend a good repairer in Melbourne? I dont want to have the expense of replacing the whole door (unless its cheaper of course - which i doubt).

... Ours isn't cracked at all, just needed adjustment.

Hey Mitch...my 2003 Grande is cracked, but realignment might be helpful too. Any how to's on that?
Also does anyone know can you put the strut from a 150 on the 120? looks like it would be more helpful to stop the sudden severe forces caused by wind or hills or reversing trailers with the door open
