  • Broken Chassis

I have just returned from another Outback trip after doing the Anne Beadell Highway.
During this trip, around 400 kms along the ABH I noticed excessive movement in the bullbar, on checking I found that the chassis had broken right through just behind the bullbar mounting & above the sway bar. I had to use a ratchet strap from the bullbar to the roof rack to take the strain & prevent the bullbar movement!
Has anybody heard of 120s breaking their chassis'?

What year is your Prado? What bullbar do you have? Do you also have a winch and dual batteries? What was your tyre pressure on that journey?

2006 1KZ, bullbar is a TJM T13 with a 9000lb winch, also have dual batteries.
Tyre pressures varied throughout the trip depending on the severity of the corrugations, also was towing a Tvan. I have done extensive Outback travel, with no such problems with previous vehicles being Land Rover & Nissan.
Prado has also done Arnhem Land & the Savanna Way etc.

          Hey,

          Bad news!

Can you post a photo showing the cracked through section of the chassis?

It's always been a concern of mine.

Another good reason to stick with alloy sovereign bar & winch cradle. Or get brush bars for Arb steel bar

But not heard of it before. Bugger!

Never posted a photo here, if it needs web hosting I won't bother.
I didn't expect the Prado to be fragile, might have to go back to Land Rover if I am going to keep to doing corrugated tracks.
I didn't post this as a whinge, just to see if others have had the same problem & to raise the issue!

Don't want to hijack, but are you suggesting this adds support to the bar?

Bars on these cars wobble their asses off.
Bars on side should help reduce it.
It may help save metal fatigue.
Just a theory, thought about it for 2.4 seconds so feel free to shoot it up

I guess it would minimise the cantilever effect, but I have seen a lot damage caused by them!

Your not the first person this has happened to. I spoke to guy in Birdsville in 2010 who cracked the chassis where his sovereign bar was mounted coming across the Anne Beadell. He also strapped it up with ratchet straps and continued across the Simpson and somewhere across the desert it fell off completely. He was so pissed off with it he dug a hole in the desert and buried his sovereign bar!

I couldn't help but notice him pulling into Birdsville with his bullbar missing.

                      Cheers Andrew

If you are using the forum on a PC, down the bottom is a quick reply box. There is a row of icons and the 3rd last is a square which looks like a picture frame. Click on that and then browse to the location of your photo and attach it that way.

Was it the chassis that broke or the souvereign bulbar mounts that broke, I thought that is why Toyota had the recall on the bulbar mounts as they were cracking and falling of.

Is it the bar shaking or the body moving ?

Pretty sure it was the chassis, but it was 5 years ago and my old timers disease isn't getting any better
