    Re: Replacement Front Windscreen Update

NZKIWIS, it sounds as if they used the old piano wire trick to cut your glass out, and ran it across your paintwork. That's inexcusable, and to try and dodgy it up is even worse. I don't know whether the aftermarket industry would make the plastic trims as yet. Genuine would likely be less than a hundred bux for both. I'd look carefully at the inside of your car as well to see if they've marked your trims, particularly the pillars.
Got the Prado back from the panel beaters who did a good job fixing the windscreen installers botched up job. However it had to go back to the glass company for them to remove the windscreen and install another new one after the paint work had been completed. Fourth time lucky ...they got the message nothing but a professional job will do.
After looking at my works company Prado's all have had at some time or other had their windscreens replaced by the same glass company all have the 15mm rubber trim across the top of the windscreen...by doing this hides any paint damage as stated in my last post . The parts below are for a petrol model may differ for those die hard diesel owners.

Toyota part numbers for windscreen mouldings are T7553460031 & T7553360041 (these are the RH & LH trims) @ $114.30 plus GST each
T7553160040 (moulding across to of windscreen) $53.58 plus GST

Most bodywork parts are the same for both diesel and petrol.

        Re: Replacement Front Windscreen

I just had my windcreen replaced (2009 petrol) for $200. After reading above I expected to pay over $600, but rang an independant place near my work. They used the existing mouldings and I can't tell the difference from factory fit. I am supprised and very impressed. Insurance companies get chaged much higher prices, as with all panel shops, but if you pay cash there are good deals.

          Hi Guys

I had my 11/07 widescreen replace by NRMA yesterday, fairly straightforward job - it’s amazing how simple a professional installer makes it look, especially with all the right tools!

As for price, just a bit over $300 with job done in my driveway, not bad hey!

NRMA said a genuine turbo diesel windscreen could be ordered from Toyota but would cost ...... wait for it ....... $1,526!!

Other suppliers said that there was 'no difference between petrol and diesel screens' and that “acoustic” glass 'was a bit of marketing hyp'e – let’s see now, 300 into 1500 goes how many times?

I replaced my wiper-blades at the same time - try to avoid any new scratches!
          Cheers,

          Tony

I've recently learned the art of replacing windscreens as I'm working for the local Novus agent. With 120 series Prados we reuse the original side mouldings because they come off easily but replace the top one as it usually gets glued to the old screen and gets all stretched out of shape when removed. The new moulding we use is identical to the original. Doesn't hide anything. You do have to be careful when cutting the old screen out but its pretty easy to do without damaging the paint(when you know what your doing!). Using a wider moulding sounded a bit dodgy to me too. I haven't heard about different types of glass before.

Interesting - I've a chip (from a chunk of ice last winter ) that hasn't been repaired properly, so will need a new screen before long. After reading all the above I went to go check ToyoDIY, and they list the following:

              56111 GLASS, WINDSHIELD
              56111‑60451 LAMINATED GLASS, T=5.3, GREEN 1 € 302.78
              56111‑60461 LAMINATED GLASS, T=5.3, GREEN, ENGLAND SPEC 1 € 369.04
              56111‑60471 LAMINATED GLASS, T=5.3, GREEN, WINDSHIELD GLASS-WITH(TOP SHADE) 1 € 345.38
              56111‑60481 LAMINATED GLASS, T=5.3, GREEN, ENGLAND SPEC & WINDSHIELD GLASS-WITH(TOP SHADE) 1 € 345.38

Noooo idea what England Spec is - something left over on the seat they sat on??

              Cheers

Gary, it's probably something to do with the glass having a BS (British Standards) emblem on it. The same as we have AS1698 on ours.

I believe their rego checks are a lot stricter than ours (even though the only difference in the glass is the standards label).

Acoustic glass on the Prado is a furphy.

Had a crack on the windscreen of my 2013 Prado GXL D4D. Contacted my insurer and got a case logged for free windscreen replacement. I needed to advise O'Brien to replace the windscreen with original one. Apparently insurer only authorize an original windscreen when in fact the in place windscreen is an original one. Repairer asked for VIN number to have the order placed. Tomorrow I will visit my local O'Brien shop to have the windscreen replaced.

I hope I dont have to worry about my car while I am on holiday from this weekend.

                  Regards
                  Zahir

Correct, insurance companies will only replace same for same.
If you have an aftermarket windscreen then that's what they will replace it with unless you want to chip in the difference.
The majority of windscreen fitters seem to damage paintwork when cutting out the late model glue in screens.
If they damage any part of a vehicle it should be repaired and not try and bullshit a customer.
Unfortunately there are alot that are less than honest.
Mistakes do happen so be honest.

My replacement was a non genuine on a 2009 Grande Diesel. I feel ripped off. I originally paid for the "Furfy" glass, that's what should have been used!

The original windscreen in my first (2005) Prado was terrible, it would scratch just cleaning the bugs off. Fortunately I copped a rock and cracked it pretty early in its life and had it replaced with an aftermarket windscreen which was heaps better.

No scratching issues with my current (2009) Prado although I have 2 small cracks from rocks, both are low and don't impact vision at all, but I should probably get a new one before my insurance renewal comes due

                            Cheers Andrew

I was just thinking that, mines a late 2005 and I recently left a very nasty scratch just gently using a razor blade to remove a sticker. Back door is the same.
My windscreen is very badly sand blasted too from oncoming traffic. It seems awfully piss weak compared to most other vehicles I can think of. Yet to score a rock in the right place to finish it off though and get a new one!
And yet while scratching so easily it's copped a few decent rocks at speed and never a crack, some minor chips is all. It's like the glass is a little softer than you would expect.

Mine was late 2005 as well Mick, at first I thought the screen must have been plastic. Maybe they had a bad batch around then.

A ball pene hammer will fix your problem
