  • GX Flares

While shopping around for mods I got a lot of info from this site. In particular people asking about flares for a GX.

After putting on the ST's they stuck out a bit on either side. As i was also getting a bar up front I needed to make a decision on where I went with the flares. After doing lots of shopping around I eventually decided on the ARB flares that match the bar pretty well. I decided to leave them in the black gel coat rather than get them match painted as i think it goes better with the front and rear also being in black.

Pics below (if i can get them to load this time...)

I think they were a bit over $1k all up.

As you can see I got them in the gel coat rather than match painted which saved a bit.

But as I was geting the front bar installed at the same time I had to decide on no flares, flexi with a narrow bar, or flexi with a wider bar.

All up taking into account the other mods it wasn't much. (Look in the mirror and repeat this 10 times each day for a week )

        Re: GX Flares

I have a bog standard late 2008 Prado and just had mags and a set of coopers fitted...

Opps... I realy am pushing any relaionship with the boys The Rims and Tyres comply with what's on the door - BUT

TJM and teh other major accessory place want aprox $1.5k plus for a set of flares ?

The cheep rubber tends to look like cheep rubber and is not what I really want to do... The 35mm stuff is and will be a must do if I am forced to, but a 25mm of the same stuff would be OK; As I am only looking to gain an extra 10mm at MAX.

Has any one else out there had success or know of a quality product that is not OT when it comes to $$$.

        Thanks

          Re: GX Flares

I've just bought my TJM bar of which they don't make a narrow one - I've also got MickeyT's which stick out so I need to do something here. I'm going to give the Bunning's Flares a go first. Hoping to shape them nicely with a dremel, if not the angle grinder will have to do. The next option is Clark Rubber flares. They have a few different width options and cost between $22 - $35 per metre. They look nice - look like they'd fit nicely around the arches but I'd be concerned they'd sag on the tops after a while as they're only rubber.

Third option is the Bushranger Flexi-flares. I've heard various stories of success and otherwise - mainly otherwise. They have a wire which runs through the flare, I assume to limit the sagging I mentioned. I've heard that pretty much everyone has problems with the wire coming out.

Fourth option is some OE looking flares such as Simon has. I had a mate tell me not to get them as they just get in the way in the bush and easily get knocked off - guess you just need to be careful with them. I do know that I see 80 series cruisers with their flares knocked off all over the place and knowing me, it'd be just my luck to do exactly that. They do look the best without a doubt though.

Guess we'll see how the Bunning's ones look first. Benefit of them is I can choose exactly how much flare I want.

Care to tell me more ? As it sounds a bit dodgy... But if it looks OK.. Then great.

              I never said it would look OK..did I ??

I think I can do a nicer job than this guy did and they'll look better on a GX than on his PajXXX which already has ugly looking plastic flare bits.

A few here at PP have used them for various reasons - just a thin edge looks OK, not so sure they'll look any good but if they don't I'll use the Clark Rubber ones and use the same screw holes.
