  • OL or Kaymar rear bar wheel carrier???

    Hi all,

After getting a $1200.00 quote to repair a couple of bits of plastic on the rear of the Prado, I am seriously thinking about purchasing a dual wheel carrier rear bar setup.
They are not cheap, but as I have only had the vehicle a few months and intend to keep it for a long time, I think the investment may be worth going for now, rather than later. Anyway, next time some goose backs into me and does not leave their details, maybe they will be left with the damage and not me.

I have been quoted $3770.00 from ARB for the Kaymar unit, but came across the Opposite Lock unit yesterday. It looks pretty good to me and retains the use of the existing tow bar. It is priced at $3100.00 fitted.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these products.... pros cons etc?

    Thanks :-)

    Hi Steve

I've had the OL wheel carrier fitted for almost 3 years now and have had it scraping along rocks and across some pretty corrugated roads with no problems. The only issues i've had is one of the gas struts broke once but that was my fault for taking the tyre off without it being locked in place (it just broke off where the shaft is hinged to the swing arm, so it was easy enough to weld back on) and the powdercoat has faded abit too as you can see in the pic.

I have the Kaymar rear bar and have had no problems with it but haven't done a lot of off road.
One of the rear LED light stopped working properly after 12 months, when I rang Kaymar for a replacement, they sent one out free of charge as long as I returned the faulty one. Can't fault their service.

My model doesn't have the gas struts.

The only real downside and this will apply to either type is more effort to get into the back of the car and when doing the shopping I now think twice if I can fit all the shopping in the back seats instead.

That and if you get some dumbass who tries to open the rear door without opening the swing arms and dents the rear door.

If it was me I'd buy the Kaymar. You said you'll keep the car for a while so that $600 odd extra is only $100/yr or $8/m

I'd also only run the swing aways if I was going on a trip as the WAF (wife acceptance factor) wouldn't be high having to lock the swing aways before opening the door with a couple of bags of shopping.

          GDay Steve,

I'm currently looking around at the same units and I'm not sure if you have come across them yet but TJM also do a rear bar/wheel carrier unit also. Not a bad looking unit also but I haven't been " brave" enough to ask the price as yet, But assuming all around the same mark +/- a couple of hundred dollars.
Kaymar at this stage does shine out for me, but like all accessories bought it is a personal preference at the end of the day.
Happy hunting , I'll stay tuned to see what you decide.

          Cheers,
          Wilson.

Have the kaymar unit fitted no dramas so far.

Only thing to remeber is additional weight on the back end usually means upgrading the rear suspension as well.

For what its worth running 400kg constant when running low on fuel its a bit skittish but bearable fully loaded no dramas even the lady friend who has a bad back (lifting too many kids at work) finds the suspension ok for herself.

I think he is referring to his springs being designed for 400kg constant load.

Re: OL or Kaymar rear bar wheel carrier???

If anyone is interested, I got a quote today from a place called
"Sports Range 4x4" for a rear wheel carrier.
I only wanted the steel bumper, but it comes all as one piece - cant be optioned off.
                  Dual wheel carrier, for $1200, + $90 for LED lights, + $fitting.
A much cheaper alternative. For those interested, It looked identical almost to the TJM style one available.

Will see what I can find.
They had a 100 series, and a GU patrol one in stock, that looked identical to the TJM one to me.

Re: OL or Kaymar rear bar wheel carrier???

When I was originally looking at getting one, Everyone told me the Kaymar had the best fitment. However you can apparently bend them dragging your back end and you end with a slightly kinked up rear bar. Opposite lock bars look good from a distance but lack the neatness of a Kaymar up close but look a sturdier bar and is what the Coal Mines appear to be using on all their 120 series. The only other brand I know of (I never knew TJM made one) is All Terrain 4x4. They seem like naother good option http://www.allterrain4x4.com.au/4x4-acc ... gory_id=21

If anyone has a photo of a TJM bar fitted to a 120 series I'd love to see it.
                          Thanks
