    Dust Entry

Like others, i found after a Kakadu Trip.. dust in EVERYWHERE... will check the towbar grommets, but also noticed in latest Overlander long term test of Prado they say "driving in convoy, requires constant use of on/off switch of recirq button..to keep cabin clean" further... "i glanced at the recirc button and thought it was off, only to realise later that dust was being sucked in by negative cabin pressure with front vent closed".. I understood that to keep dust out.. recirc should be ON with air con running to increase pressure in cabin... am i wrong???

I run mine on fresh all the time, except when behind a vehicle leaving a dust trail (or passing). I switch it to recirc but back to fresh ASAP.

The climate control switches it also as it needs to keep the car cooler if need be.
I havent got a major dust entry problem, but yes, there is a small amount upon opening of the rear door after heaps of dirt roads (Long distance).

I was very happy with the relatively low dust ingress on recent 14,000km trip of which approx 2,000km was dirt and very dusty roads.

Before I left I ensured the rear grommet for the towbar wiring was sealed.

I left the vent on fresh all the time (I would not have done this if I had not read this in the forum). Only used recirculate when I could see the clouds of dust from an oncoming car (yep, another Britz 4WD speeds by).

          Hiya Pete

By the time we got into Queensland we were calling them Britz Wrekz ... as most of them had been beaten up. One we bumped into at Airlie Beach had most of the nose stoved in ... as a roo had decided to join the party. These guys liked travelling in the cool of the early evening ... and nothing could convince them otherwise .. even a marsupial visitor. ops:

            Re: Dust Entry

In his new thread Dust In Rear, now closed, mal56 said
has anyone had problems with getting dust in the rear(3rd seat area removed). Can this be fixed by removing the side trims and taping /caulking up where it enters. I asume it is through/around the rear tail lights?
I have a 2007 D4D GXL and had huge dust problems on my first outback trip - see my post earlier in this thread.

I have since worked out about 80% of the problem.

Open the back door. You'll see a large black plastic trim running the width of the car below the door seal. Unbolt the door stay and then remove this trim. You will see a body frame crossmember with four captive nuts with nothing in them. Now get under the car and look at the same crossmember from underneath. There are a number of holes stamped into the crossmember, some circular, some oval.

I have discovered that the inside of this crossmember vents into the jack compartment on the passenger side, and probably into the equivalent area on the driver side. (I placed a bright light in the jack compartment and saw the light from underneath through the holes in the crossmember.)

I filled the holes - bolts in the captive nuts, blanking plugs and putty in the others - and that has cured about 80% of the problem. I still get dust in the rear but heaps less than before my mods.

I reckon it's a warranty issue but my dealer doesn't want to know ....

            Cheers

              Re: Dust Entry

I fitted a reverse camera the other day, and found another point of entry for dust in the rear.

The plastic seal behind the trim inside the back door is a pretty slack job, and there was plenty of dust inside the door and lots of evidence it was making it's way past the plastic. We taped it up good with duct tape before putting the trim back.

Looks like I better have a look at those other holes too.

Fixed this today with a few plugs and silicone... good find as I've had this trim off a few times and never clicked about the four captive nuts

                  Re: Dust Entry

on a recent trip to western qld had some dust enter the cargo area of the car, could see dust right across the rear door seal, upon our return car was taken to toyota dealer we purchased from, rear door seal has been replaced under warranty no complaints and no fuss made about this from the dealer will test out on our next trip, also had rear visor installed.

I am looking at your post on 15-08-09 regarding dust entry and note your photos have been removed/deleted.
Any chance you could re-post these please as I am very interested.
                      Thank you

It has been a long time since MickL visited this forum so I doubt you will get a response from him. If you follow 4xx4 Driver's post bove, you should be able to plug up the holes described.

Dont know were they pulled it out from - about the size of a shoe box with 2 rows of four little vents. Mine was missing the bottom set of vents hence a mighty amount of bull dust got in.....
I have noticed that same problem with the dust and i have tried hitting the nail on the head.... I sealed all the grommets and I have now blocked the vents behind the body flares on each side of the car at the rear... I used some 3 mm insertion rubber and a few tech screws... I didnt seal it off completely with sikaflex as I fugure if the vents were a 'pressure release' of some sort then a 100% seal may not be the best thing... I think I have still blocked it off a good 98% though... lol.... I have had it like this for a few weeks now with no difference in cabin pressures of what i can notice anyways... I think them vents were straight up just a crappy design... out with the crud and in with the plug... few pics to show what I have done...

Has anyone had trouble with dust getting in the door seals on the lower back passenger doors through the little vent holes in the door rubbers. I to had the grommet problem when they fitted the wiring for the fridge they just came up throw the gromment and pushed it out and never replaced it but it is all good now that's to my friends helping me pull all the black widow draws out and replace them back in what a job.
