  • Fix rear door not opening because of dust

Over the last few years the rear door fails to open after a few days on the dust. Leaning in hard while opening helps but last time it got dicey. Washing out the latch at every opportunity helps. Lockdown gave me an opportunity to get down this far on my to do list. As far my Prado is concerned the issue was a very worn bush at the end of the rod from the handle down to the lever that operates the latch (see picture). Undid the door lock, wiggled it around and slid a washer onto the arm to ensure the lever is fully activated by the external door handle.

I have constantly had the same issue in both my previous 120 and current 150. I now blow into the lock every time I open the rear door in dusty conditions but the design is dodgy in these conditions. For what it is worth my 80 series wasn't much better. I have learnt NOT to use WD40. It works for a day or 2 but then the dust sticks to it. I now carry a can of silicon spray and use it daily on dusty trips. Still not perfect but at least I can open the door on dusty trips. Other than on outback trips the door doesn't get opened much so I doubt that wear is an issue.

Google prado rear door latch and you will see this is a long-standing problem and the solutions are as above. Hose it out after dusty trips and use compressed air while you are away. Silicon spray is a must pack item.

I wonder if brake clean, MAF cleaner or contact cleaner would do the same job? Thoughts?

Had this issue myself in the past. Water works wonders. Squirt water from a water bottle into the lock & it’ll function well again. Pull off the rear door cover on occasion & hose it out in there as so much dust will coat everything inside. Spray on lubes are very short lived. Get a tub or a tube of grease or grease from a grease gun & smear thinly onto & into moving parts with your fingers. It’ll last a long time. It can be removed properly when cleaning with a spray can of degreaser before being reapplied.
