My surface rust is virtually nothing luckily, mainly where some dust has also got in around the seal and the moisture has hung onto it. Wont take long to touch up and whack some sealant on the bits up top to stop the water running down the rubber.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

      Steve,

Will be checking the rubber flap you spotted to make sure mine is sealing, thanks for the photos

Your rust in similar to mine and lucky for us and everyone else with this problem that someone on pradopoint spotted it and spread the word as its not something you would even know was there or look for.

When I removed my seal I noticed that the boot seal has a slight join in it and that join sits on the bottom right in the centre which is handy for aligning it up when you put it back on and helps to make sure its not stretched more to one side, I marked the seal before removing at both top corners to make sure the seal went back on the in the same position.

I checked mine and there was no signs of rust what so ever which is good considering the climate in live in.

I also removed the wiring loom and clean around the clips properly which I will wack some silastic before I put the clips back in.... [IMG][/IMG] There's also this little hole in between the brackets for the rear seats which nothing clips into so these will also get a tad of silastic [IMG][/IMG] This is the bit near drivers side light after three coats of rust converter [IMG][/IMG]

Now to do a few coats of under coat, it says give three hours of the rust coverter before applying primer at 20c so I have just wacked the heater in the rear of the car to help dry it a bit quicker. Would like to get the primer on tonight and final colour coats of white tomorrow morning. I also used the cleaner on the rubber seal which I wouldn't advise. It certainly removes the crap but it actually started to crinkle the rubber up but seems to have straightened its self out at the moment. Worst case if its no good Ill buy a new one but looks like it will be ok so I would advise NOT to use this cleaner on the rubber. My mate does windscreens so I went and saw him this morning to ask where to get this goo I read up about, well guess who had shit loads of it as he uses it but why I couldn't find it is only available direct from manufacturer and you have to buy in bulk which he does... He said to apply it all the way around the rubber seal prior to pushing rubber seal back on. [IMG][/IMG]

                    Steve,

                    Good job mate,(nice pics)

I noticed that the rust near your drivers side tail light also has a metal join near it like the one I pointed out at the top, might also need some extra sealant around that area to keep the water out..

Yeah Mate will be paying special attention to these area's. Shouldn't get any worse with the convertor on it, primer, final colour coat then the silastic to seal it all up........Im hoping the rubber will be ok. Worst case is $230 genuine Toyota from my mate (I use to work for Toyota so still have some contacts in spare parts, luckily).........Should be all sweet when finished. I'm a bit disappointed that the paint in this area or should I say lack of from the factory is a bit on the slack side from Toyota. That rubber was also a prick to clean, spent over 2 hours cleaning with that stuff then running it through a bucket of soapy water cleaning it out then had to get the hose in there the gap and the amount of shit that sits behind the lip within the rubber itself is amazing. Soooo much crap still come out just using the hose and I thought it was fairly clean lol..... Will check it out properly tomorrow when its had time to dry and make sure its clean other wise it will need another go. Need it back on the road by tomorrow night so hopefully wont need another clean and waiting for it to dry out properly........Cheers Steve

                        Steve,

                        $230 that a fantastic price.

When I cleaned out the seal I found that there is inward facing flaps on the inside edge and mine had bits of rust under the flaps even though it looked clean so I used the end of a bent welding rod and an old t-shirt and got in under the edge and got any bits of rust hiding and found it was still a little damp ..

The last time I fixed rust on a car was on my old 74 Fairlane and the Prado was the last car I thought i'd see rust on.

                                Steve,

I have a great idea mate.

Maybe you could buy a shit load of red pastry scrapers and sell them on Pradopoint as a "120 prado rear seal rust removal tool" , sell them for $30 a pop and make a killing.
