  • Paint peeling

Ok, so I'm aware of the issues with mostly , I think, corollas with the peeling paint. I've also seen that this issue has affected some other models 120 Prado grande was one I've seen mentioned... Also happens to be the model
Prado I have and I also have a paint peeling issue.

Has anyone else had this and did Toyota come to the party for you? If they did, how did you go about getting them to fix it? If not, what have you done to fix it?

I'm thinking it'll have to be a full respray but I have zero idea of the cost involved

If it helps anyone, it's a 2008 kdj120 grande and has the pearlescent white paint (don't know the code and the Prado is not home to go check) unfortunately I can't find the photos I took of the peeling paint either ‍♂️ but to explain locations
*Under both rear 1/4 windows - just along the top lip near the glass
*Same area but on the rear tailgate
*8mm ish spot above drivers door handle
*Bonnet on the drivers side "upright" bit between the head light and grille - that patch is about half the size of my palm

I'll try and get paint code and pictures when I'm both awake and near the Prado.

    Cheers

There's a FB page dedicated to Toyota's paint peeling issue on the white paint where all you see is the primer left. Are you aware of that FB page?

yep joined. Mine is definitely not as bad as some of the ones there. But I'd prefer to nip it in the bud if that's possible

        Hey Solitude,

I had peeling duco on my 95 series that may have had a respray prior to my ownership. It began on the roof and bonnet.

I had my roof resprayed but didn’t worry about the bonnet. I thought that because the bonnet was still painted the only problem was it didn’t look great.

When I finally got around to having the bonnet painted the job was far harder because water had absorbed through the paint (no duco) and rusted underneath the paint.

Is your paint peeling or is it your duco?

Over time most of the duco lifted so I did all panels. I hope this is of some help.

It's paint. Can see the primer underneath.

Its a known issue that affected a few models from early 2000's (not sure of the end date of affected vehicles) but mostly corollas and I think 99.9% were white

An old post but just for the sake of it .... there is only one practical solution to the white pearl paint failure. Learn to spray paint and fix it properly yourself. With the resources available today, recommend a website called 'Paint Society' (aimed at DIY's painting at home), it CAN be done.

                Hey

solidute, my 2008 120 Grande is currently in the shop for its second panel respray after a 2-3 month process to get approved.
Unfortunately, I think you may have a tough time getting approval as this panel respray was only approved on the basis that I had identified the peeling paint on my original warranty claim in 2022.
I submitted my claim through "Handle My Complaint" via the Facebook page. Handle My Complaint made it a smooth process and I'm surprised that there wasn't a fee.
Note: at the time of my warranty claim there was a bit of heat on Toyota regarding recalls and peeling paint and there were talks of customers taking class action. I believe that I was lucky with my timing.

                Car Details:
120 Prado Grande, 03/2008 build, 3rd owner, 070 paint code (pearl white), typically garaged and handwashed (monthly), Western Australia

                Respray Details:
2022 Claim - About 2-3 months between submission and approval. RH rear panel had significant peeling (photo). LH rear panel had small signs of peeling and cracking paint. Small 5-cent piece section above windscreen bubbling.
2022 Respray - RH rear panel stripped and 3 layers of 070 paint code applied. Very impressed with the finish - I can't even tell where the new paint started or finished.

2024 Claim - LH rear panel had noticeable signs of peeling and cracking paint. 20-cent piece section above windscreen cracking and peeling.
2024 Respray - Both of the claims were approved on the basis that the peeling paint was identified in the original approved claim, they said there would be no chance that it was approved otherwise. The old girl is currently at the panel beaters until early-July.

Happy to field queries - I'll try to keep an eye out for notifications.
