  • ABS Wheel Sensor Urgent Help Please

    Hi guys

Need help and cant find anything specific by search.

Went 4WD'ing today as was unlucky enough to get a branch stuck in my left rear wheel.
It unfortunately ripped out the ABS sensor wire off the sensor which has lit up my dash like a xmas tree and disabled ABS, traction control and stability control.

I took it all apart and was able to repair it.

All the warning lights are STILL present and functions disabled.

Assuming I have repaired it, what Id like to know urgently if anyone can tell me is,

Does it need to be reset or the fault codes removed by Toyota?
Can I maybe disconnect the battery and this will have a similar effect?

    How can I fix this?????

sometimes when the ABS light has come on, and the ABS sensor has been either replaced or repaired, you can normally get the light to go off if you drive in a straight line over 40 or 60km/h, can't remember which it is. this means all the wheels are turning at the right speed, and the sensors all register normally.

other than that, have you checked to see if the sensor is actually fixed? as in, using a multimeter at the plug end and measuring resistance when turning the wheel?

      Thanks mate
Ive been working in the dark with lead lights (that sucks) and cant find the other end.
Do you know where the other ends plugs into a harness (Im guessing)?

You think it should come good, then I might just go for a drive around the block?

i've replaced and repaired some ABS sensor wires at work, and on most toyota cars, to turn the ABS light off after the sensor is fixed, you had to drive in a straight line over a certain speed or a certain distance. i'm not sure on the later model vehicles.

to find the plug, you should be able to follow the wires from the sensor. they are normally no longer than 600mm to the plug. the wiring will run up to the chassis/body at some point from the diff, and there should be a seperate plug for each sensor.

other than that, i'm not sure. i don't even think you can clear it with a scangauge, and disconnecting the battery doesn't work and just resets everything.

Hi 1coolbanana.If you can repair the wires for the ABS,removing the ecu/ecm fuse or disconnecting the battery for longer than a minute will erase the fault codes. The wiring harness plugs into the main body harness just above the diff housing

Certainly was a bugger getting this apart, getting the pins out, soldering the wires back on getting all back together...... but worth it

May find out how much a new one is for piece of mind. You were kidding about the $400 right?

Thank to you both, much appreciated
                Cheers

oh man, sucked to be you. also unfortunate that it broke so close to the plug. its always easier if it breaks half way along.

                  cheers

Got this out of a US 4Runner manual.

very similar to what you had quoted. Well done!

Thanks Samo, sensor itself seems fine and although I happy with my cable repair I might get a new cable for $80 just to be 100%.
                              Many thanks
