  • ABS Issue

Just installed 2" Lift all round. When doing the front I had to take the calipers, steering arms and top ball joint off on each side with a fair bit of shoving and pulling required to fit new suspension in. Axle/driveshaft dropped out of left side of diff. Once back together, discovered ABS light was on. No previous ABS issues.

Can anyone give me any ideas what may have happened?

Check you ABS sensor cables in the front. A couple of guys on here have had the cables torn or damaged when performing this task. Have a good look over everything and hopefully it's repairable. Good luck...

Thanks mate. That's the kind of thing I was thinking and I hope it's nothing more serious. Worse case scenario I have to replace to front ABS Sensors.

        Hi WOZCLEAN
When ARB fitted our OME kit to our 120 series, it came back with the ABS light aglow.
It turned out to be the left front ABS sensor wire damaged during the installation.
The job was done by thier overflow Guy whom is also known to do alignments? (Of a Fashion)
A new cable was fitted by Toyota about the $250 mark.
Just one of those things, these cables could just as easily be damaged off road in my view.
        Good Luck
        Cheers

Really hope I haven't damaged it that will require a replacement at a cost of $250 but certainly looks like it might be. Hopefully it can be fixed without the extra coin being dished out.

I just had the same problem. After my lift, I had the ABS and the handbrake light come on. Turns out it was the ABS sensor which was replaced free of charge and within 2 hours. This fixed both problems.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

It's not me that's the tight arse but SWMBO who has a strict budget with no real room for f*#@ ups. So I really like your idea and was already thinking along those lines anyway and because I did the lift myself (unlike Gramps) I am going to have to fix the problem.

                  $250!!!....

I had the same problem after my lift was fitted.

The installer quoted some ridiculous price for a replacement wire from Toyota, and then they had no stock, so the installer fabricated a replacement himself.

A few months ago the ABS light came on again, so I figured the non-standard wire hadn't been up to the task. Dropped in to the local Toyota dealer to get a price for a replacement wire, and found it was very reasonable - around $50 from memory (and that included all the brackets). Took it home figuring it must be a wrong wire given how cheap it was, but it was the right one and the fitting took me 20 minutes (10 to get the old one off and 10 to install the new one).

                  No problems since......

Thanks one and all, it was indeed a broken wire. Repaired the wire myself with a bit of soldering and sourced a replacement.

This is obviously a common issue that occurs when replacing/upgrading suspension, so for those that are planning to do their own in the future, be aware that the ABS wire does not stretch (much).

Good you got it sorted, but not sure why you needed to undo all of that? I have swapped front struts heaps of times and never undone the caliper or the steering arms and ball joints. I am not even sure I could stretch the ABS wire even if I wanted when I swap struts.

Probably pull mine out again in the next month so will have a closer look then, but sway bar removed, two bolts on the bottom ball joint and undo the strut is all I have ever done.

                      Cheers Andrew

Probably because hubby didn't exactly know what he was doing on the driver's side which took him the longest anyway. Next time... he'll probably do it differently.

I just did what AJ said yesterday. Will be pulling the front suspension out again today as I forgot to install a small part. Didn't use spring compressors either

Neither did I the first time, that is what PP is for, there are a few threads on suspension installs, I like an old one that I think chippy posted the pics when they did Fishnuts rig? Anyway plenty of pics and step by step instructions.

Like most things the answer is posted somewhere on PP if you can find it!

                            Cheers Andrew
