  • Brake Rattle.

Hey guys i have read some stuff around the place saying that the brake setup on the 120's can rattle after some time due to some clip or something in the calliper.
I have a pretty bad rattle under the car that i initially thought was the sway bar bushes but after inspecting them and replacing with new ones just to be sure they are clearly not the issue and i believe its the brakes.
when i am driving along with no braking force applied it rattles, as soon as i touch the brakes-nothing..
has anyone else had this problem, if so what have you done to stop it?
    cheers guys

    Usually brakes don't rattle.
I can't understand how they could ever make the kind of noise (rattle) you are describing, but I have not heard it.
Check your wheel nuts & caliper mounting bolts as a matter of safety.
If it stops when u apply brakes it must be close by?

    Hopefully someone else knows more.

Is the rattle front or rear? Parts of the handbrake assembly on the rear can come adrift and cause a rattle or a scraping noise.

      Cheers Andrew

The brakes supposedly have an anti rattle clip on them that can get left off during replacement. Not sure if it can work loose.

Or it could be a loose disc.

Or gravel/stones caught in your bash plate

I had a rattle from front right of the car. Rattled when going over cats eyes , speed humps, potholes and pretty much constantly on dirt roads. When I put the left front wheel in a pot hole I couldn't hear it. When I out the right front through the same hole I heard it. Noise disappeared when under braking. Eg if I drove along the centre line with right wheel on cats eyes I heard it, and then braked I didn't hear a noise

My front rotors were rooted when I had a look. New pads, rotors and new steering rack and it's gone.

Don't know if it was the rack but it needing doing so had all three done at once.

You will probably find the pads have been changed at some stage and the anti rattle shims have been left out. Typical of some dodgy mechanics. They are there for a reason. Hence why when you put your foot on the brake it stops as the pistons are pushing onto the pads a touch just enough to stop the rattle.....Cheers Steve

well the problem has now been solved.. the passenger side brakes didn't have a clip in there so there has been one put in now and i have also put some Heavy Duty silicone on the plate that the pistons push on (don't worry i siliconed them to the brake pad).. result is great, no more annoying noise.. next problem to fix is the diff lock, when activated it doesn't let the car go anywhere.
