Clicking from Brakes I think!

Hi all

Our prado has developed a clicking in the front end when it hits a bump, it is a metallic high pitched click. I asked the toyota blokes to have a butchers whilst it had its 5000km service. But of course they came back and said its all good. It almost sounds like a pad in the caliper is loose. The noise was quite disconcerting yesterday on the corrugations, i had to turn the radio up and wind the window up. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where i should be looking. Or even what i should be pulling off first.
The reason i suspect the brakes is that if i cover the brakes when on the bumps the noise disappears. Although the noise on my left doesnt.

this is a common noise that covers alot of toyota vehicles.
what we did to fix this, was to remove the pads,
check all of the anti-rattle plates and clean.
(the flat type that sit against the back of the pad)
and apply anti-squeal (very thin layer) between each plate
and the outer plate that touches the caliper.
put it all back together and leave it for an hour, and all should be good
anti-squeal is sold at most auto-parts places in a tube. good stuff

Hey S&S Damonat is spot on.....

The Anti Squeal that he is talking about is orange in colour and it is like rubber when it sets so it's stops your pads from slopping around so much.

PBR anti-squeal adhesive is specially formulated to absorb noise and vibrations which stem from the brake pads. This product is water resistant, easy to apply and suitable for all popular disc brake caliper applications.

no problem at all.
the anti-squeal only absorbs small movement between the applied surfaces.
it does not affect or alter the braking system in any other way.

hello All

I have been searching the web for any clues re: brake rattles in fron end.

Finally came across this forum and have joined.
I purchased 2006 PRADO GXL new in Dec 06. In July/Aug 2007 the vehicle developed rattle in both wheels when driving on uneven surface, but rattle disappeared under braking.
My approach to having the problem rectified is different to yours - This is a warranty issue and Toyota is responsible for the fix. The dealer has had 4 attempts (remove pads, fix with anti-rattle plates/shims, etc.., etc,.. ect) to rectify the problem, the most recent being 3 weeks ago where the front calipers (both wheels) were replaced. As at today I have phoned Toyota Australia - Customer Relations to expedite a solution.

they may say "it is a design of the brakes to have a small clearance to help clear debre - be that mud, dirt etc. this is not a fault".
and i would agree to a point.
i have never seen a seized pad on a toyota due to mud, dirt etc. so the design works.
they are marketing to the masses. therefore like any product, it needs to be able to work in alot of different conditions.
the fix is easy, to apply the anti-squeal, and in most cases it works.
hope you have some luck in fixing the noise.
let us know what they say and do.

I have had the same issue since 2005 i was told it is due to the floating pad design by toyota has never affected braking so it does not bother me.

I also sometimes get a click when i first roll backwards

I have te same and it does click sometimes while going into reverse however i am prepared to live with it after all of the sticking pad problems i went through with my holden ute

i have worked in mining previously and the cruiser utes we had never had any of the noises that we get on our prado. the brakes rattle that loud you seriously think that something is loose, it is too loud to have the window down. toyota didnt want to know about it at the first 3 month service.
I dont believe its right. it seems excessive.
