  • Disconnecting Traction Control

I have done the usual search(14 pages)
I can't find anything on disconnecting the Grande Traction Control, having just done Robe S.A. for the 10th time (1st time in a Grande)I have found traction control to be a BIG negative in really soft sand, even using Maxtrax the TC would brake the wheels when recovering from a bog, and steep dunes the Engine revs would be overided, and the TC would apply the brakes at the worst possible time, whilst I believe TC is a great device, let the human decide whats best in very, very soft sand.
So my question, how is it easily disconnected
    cheers Stevo

I thought it was disabled when you engaged the centre diff lock or is this just autos?

        Re: Disconnecting Traction Control

        Hi Steveo,

I remember asking this same question here. Though, it was not so easy to dig it up on search either, so no worries for not finding it. Anyway, the answer seemed to be "no - it's not possible to disable TC".

I have read plenty of intellectual debate about TC being a less-attractive option for sand driving, but this is the first time I've learned of real-life experience. The debate usually goes in circles... those with TC recommend it, those without TC wonder if the theory applies in practice.

I also would prefer to have the ability to control TC (though I bought a GXL without TC, so I guess I controlled it during the purchasing phase ).

Having the ability to disable TC is one of those things I would love to see in the next model. In the meantime, a DIY hack would be great too. Anyone?

        Cheers,
        LFaR.

I have answered my own question, but thanks to the replys I have received.
The simple answer ......... remove fuse 55 in the engine bay!!!! (see handbook)
somtimes the most obvious answers are right under your nose, my advice to anyone
driving in really soft sand is pull out this fuse and all that electronic gizmo has gone!
              cheers Stevo

Interesting, have you tried it? I also note fuse 53 covers the same features...

                  Re: Disconnecting Traction Control

Pulled out number 53, made no difference, 55 pulled out and the dash indicated that VSC and TC were no longer operating,
I have not physically checked it but I assume that TC and VSC are now disconnected, can't wait to get on the sand again
                  cheers Stevo

                      Re: Disconnecting Traction Control

By its very nature I would consider traction control a disadvantage in soft sand. It applies the brakes to wheels that lose traction but in the sand you want them to keep spinning so you don't lose momentum. Having said that I did leave it on most of the time up at Fraser and didn't really have any issues. In long stretches of deep sand I would look to engage the centre diff lock to keep a consistent drive through all wheels.

This probably opens up further debate on general off roading. Where to use traction control and where to lock the centre diff. I would think that in a steep climb on loose surface the traction control would be excellent. I have really tried this myself yet so only guessing. Same goes for deep rits and uneven ground where you woudl be consistently lifting a wheel.

Are there any other times where you would engage the centre diff and not use the traction control?

With all due respect to everyone thats been to Fraser Island, let me please say that Fraser Island is Probably the one of the easiest places to drive, there are only a few spots on the whole island where sand driving can have it's problems, The Simpson is easy too, now I do understand I'm going off track with the original thread, but my original question has been answered. Traction control can be disconnected and I can only suggest to anyone driving in really soft sand is to look at their options with TC
                        thanks Stevo

                              Re: Disconnecting Traction Control

Have you driven the vehicle with the fuse pulled ?

The DAT and TC measure engine RPM, auto RPM wheel speed using ABS sensors, and speedo input.

Change any of the perameters they operate in [diff gears, speedo gear, etc] and the lights will come on, and a chnace it can go into "limp home mode" which see's it need to be gerar shifted manually, as it will want to take off in 4th gear, retarded timing/power level reduced while in limp home, and not give 100% throttle position.

Will be interested to hear if any of the above apart from the dash lights coming on come into play, when fuse is removed.
