  • VX 2004 .. VSC TROUBLE !!

I just got a 2004 VX and this thing is playing up on me... not even the dealers know what's wrong !! not surprised...
Well, the problem is.... while driving on straight road, the car puts a slight brake to the front wheels and makes my steering jerk to the left and back to normal...there is also a noise from the wheels and a chime goes off..ting ting ting... the dealer said something to do with the stability control... does anyone had this problem before and know how to get it fixed ?? Please help.

Sounds like it has an issue with the VSC system, could be in the sensors, could be in the computer. Toyota are about the best place to check it out, have they plugged it in yet to check the computer codes??

Sounds like the steering center point needs to be reset.. this can happen if a wheel alignment is done incorrectly.

What happens is the vehicle thinks its turning a corner (or turning alot sharper than it actually is) etc and activatesthe stability control.

Most common cause is when they take off the steering wheel and move it around to make it straight when driving straight ahead instead of doing it through adjustment in the wheel alignment.

      Hope this makes sense......

Tks Team Piggy, Yeah the car is at Toyota since 2 days and they are trying to make the problem happen again while their computer is connected coz there are no codes in the memory as no warning lights are on !!
If this is going to be costly affair ..does anyone know how to turn the VSC off ??

the problem does not happen while turning but while driving straight ahead or starting to move from a stopped position...

Got the car back from Toyota and they have raised their hands off the problem... they cannot find what's wrong as the computer does not register anything when this happens. They have even checked with technical expertise from the main Toyota folks !! They have now advised me to bring it back when the problem occurs more frequently  and also they said wet conditions could also be a reason due to the recent rains :?
If this problem with VSC happens at higher speeds then I am done :? I wish I could turn the damn thing off...

Thats really not good enough is it? ..... it is a safety issue after all. Is it under warranty? I'd try another dealer...failing that a call to Consumer Affairs for some legal advice.. maybe contact Toyota head office yourself directly ... maybe mention who is liable when this random fault causes an accident

Have you tried pulling the system fuse?

No I haven't tried pulling the fuse...which is the fuse that i need to pull and is it advisable to drive around with the fuse off ..i.e with all the warning lights on...ABS, VSC. TRC etc ?? Could any other systems go wrong if i did this ?

                Please let me know..

I don't have my workshop manual at work so if no one else can look it up today I'll check when I'm home.

The only possible issue I can think of is like you said, annoying dash lights staying on or if the fuse also powers the ABS circuit.

                    Hi,

As mentioned is a safety issue, I would be asking the dealer if the car is road worthy, get them to
give you something in writing to state the same. You could also contact Toyota via email and ask if the car is safe to drive.

I'm sure if you do the above they will take more interest in your problem.

                    Cheers

Moderator edit- I’ve removed your advice. You cannot drive around on hard surfaces with the centre diff locked. It will cause transmission wind up and in a worst case scenario you will break something.

Do you have non-standard wheels or tyres ?

All wheels and tyres are fine, checked and aligned...

Could I drive around with the fuse pulled out for the ABS/VSC/TRC etc..... ?

You've still got this problem

I'd be trying harder to escalate this with Toyota or try a different dealer.

As a limp home option sure, but I wouldn't drive around on a daily basis with these features disabled or with the fault you still have either.

Another thing is (using SA as an example but I'm sure it's the same case nation wide) disabling or removing a safety feature like ABS renders a vehicle unroadworthy (Thus insurance void) and you'd be liable in any accident found to have been contributed by the system being disabled.

Park it across the dealers drive... they might show some more interest in getting it fixed then....

Have you tried any other dealers?
