Re: Bendix 4WD Pads off when used cold.

OK did a cold test today and either I don't have the same issue or I'm not sensitive enough to pick it up. I had a B21 BMW years ago with metallic brake pads and sintered clutch (it was an ex track car) and that was lethal in town because the slow speeds didn't get enough heat into the brakes. Occasional visits to the big smoke meant lots of space between me and the cars in front. The brakes don't feel anything like that and I can apply enough pressure with just a big toe (left or right) to stop.

Don't know where you can go with this other than be aware of it since the brakes are fine after the initial stop. The last resort thing that I can think of is perhaps the brake pistons are retracting into the caliper too far after you have stopped and the brakes cooled down. You could try push hard on the brakes while the engine is off/just started before you move and see if that makes a difference. Could be that your piston o rings are just pulling the pads too far clear of the discs and your first stop pushes them back out. Just an idea.

Re: Bendix 4WD Pads off when used cold.

      Hi

I have the same experience. I replaced the front rotors with DBA slotted rotors about 12 months ago. Fitted the Titanium stripe 4wd Bendix pads at the same time.

When starting off in the morning, (I have a flat driveway) I drop the car into drive and have to really press the brakes hard as the engine is reving higher due to a cold motor. Once I hit the end of the street, the brakes have enough heat in them to work well. Once at temperature, they are great and dont require excessive force. I think it's just the composition of the pads.

I have replaced the brake fluid completely to ensure there is no air in the lines so this is not the issue.

Just out of interest, i drive the Petrol Prado (infrequently) and a Diesel Prado daily. The brake feel ie. its less spungee on the Diesel model. It must have something to do with the brake booster being different.

I've never noticed anything with mine. I'm running bendix in the front and they feel quite responsive even when cold in the morning.

Just had the 120k service done by a reputable toyota 4wd specialists in WA today and when picked car up -they replaced the rear pads with bendix 4wd pads.
As I had them already in the front and is what they also use, they asked if I've had issues with the bendix. I said was aware of extra break dust, but asked me if any issues with squealing noise. Said no - none that I've noticed.
They said bendix must of changed compound recently as they getting quite a few complaints, so bad that they have sourced an alternative for the 200 series LC they service - prado 120's not as bad ,yet to find a suitable replacement....
Said I would be definitely back if any noise noticed from the back
Anyone else recently replace with bendix 4WD's with this issue??

In mine and customers I only use BENDIX 4x4 in prados & most 4x4's
I have never experienced reduced friction when cold in any of the prados at least.
In my vehicle they work very well all the time.
This was an issue with "metal kings" a long time ago.
It is clear some are having this problem, it could be a fitment preparation issue?
If new discs or in particular if discs are machined, you MUST properly clean off the protective coatings or carbon or you could end up with problems like are described here.
IMO there is nothing wrong with the pads, but talk to Bendix, if they have been correctly fitted, they will help you out.
The earlier 4x4 pads did produce a slight squeal, but this seems to be fixed now.
You should not get much dust if any with these pads.
With the temp range of 400, it does not mean they are designed to be working close to 400, it means they will work up to 400, after this you will experience less friction (fade). Normal driving they are running much cooler than that.

I've had no issues with Bendix 4wd pads in mine either. Actually due for replacement after close to 80,000kms and will be replacing with same.

I'm wondering if some of the Bendix 4WD specific pads are dodgy and I got a bad set? The install was to the book always clean discs etc. I have since replaced the Bendix 4WD specific pads with Bendix's new Stealth pads. Huge improvement in cold stopping power and much better bite overall. After comparing the two pads I won't buy the 4WD pads anymore.

I was using the Bendix Stealth pads.
Recently i installed new RDA slotted rotors with RDA Extreme pads.
                      The brakes are deadly now.
The missus is still driving the 'BENDIX' way and not use to the RDA Extremes.
Softer brake applications are giving a better stop!!!

OK time for pads/rotors in the old girl, not bad after 5 years and 84,000klms

Choices are - RDA rotors/pads or DBA T2 rotors/Bendix pads

                          Thoughts...

Either you will be happy with...
I used both bendix stealth and now im using Rda extreme pads.
I am still surprised how good the RDA extreme feel...
Excellent for towing and no cold brake fade like people complain about with the bendix.
If you like trying quality products that are different to the rest seriously give them a go.
Flush new fluid thru the system as part of the service as well...
And get the RDA SLOTTED rotors... You wont believe the stopping power.

Drop into a brake shop and have a look at the pads. 100% surface contact on the rotor...
Bendix are weird and have about 70%. The surface area gets larger as the pad wears..
You see what i mean when you put them side by side...
RDA EXTREME & RDA SLOTTED rotors all the way brother!!!

Another brand to consider for your Pads are QFM Brake pads. I just had my front and rears replaced with QFM pads and am very impressed in the improved braking power I now have! ( nice price too!)

I know this is going to sound like an anal question. The hats on the RDA rotors are plain metal, do they rust and look crap over time? The DBA hats are nice and painted
