I am about to fit a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. Actually I am fitting two – the other one is in a mates GXL the same as mine. Figured doing both at the same time with 2 people on the job would be the way to go.

The instructions are a little light on – or am I just thinking it is more complicated than it really is?

The instructions mention that modern cars have a socket/loom that can be just connected to get all the power etc. Is this available in the 120 Prado and if so where do I find it and identify it? Presumably I would need to buy the ‘socket’ that would fit. Where is a good place to buy this?

I presume I will still have to run a wire to the back connection to the trailer – or is this already ready connected in the Prado and available at the rear?

Sorry for seeming so dumb - it is the first time I have used electric brakes and I don’t want to stuff things up.

      Thanks for any help…

        G'day Violet,
If you have a genuine Toyota towbar and wiring harness fitted, then in the jack compartment you will find a wiring loom with a loose tail of blue wire. That's the electric brake wire that goes straight to the appropriate pin in the trailer socket. Your Prodigy has a blue output wire (blue is the standard for electric brakes). You will have to join up a run of wire and thread it through your car from the Prodigy's blue output to the blue tail in the jack compartment. Or you can go straight to the trailer socket and replace Toyota's blue wire with your own.

I had some thoughts about the gauge of wire you should use too - see this topic http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?t=2582

There are other wires that have to be spliced and/or connected - follow the Prodigy instructions 'cos I can't remember them!!!

One thing I do remember - you need to have a sensor wire connected to the brake lights. I found the wiring at the brake switch (on the pedal under the dash) too hard to decipher - there are four or five there. I found the easiest way to get the right connection was to run the sensor wire with the blue wire all the way to the back of the car and then splice it to the left side brake light at the brake/tail/indicator light assembly. The assembly is dead easy to remove to give easy access to the wiring loom.

        Cheers

Re: Location of Caravan Electric Brake Controller

Sounds like a reason to have another 'Tech' day.

On that subject (and off topic) - when's the next WA chapter field day??
