  • Location of Caravan Electric Brake Controller

Have just taken delivery of a new Petrol GXL Auto after 9 years in a Jackaroo. Next week it is booked in for installation of UHF - getting a GME TX3440 which means that only the microphone is attached to the dash area.

Also getting another 12v plug in the rear for fridge and wiring for anderson plug for charging of caravan battery.

The other item to be installed is a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. However, I am unsure of the best position for installation. I was thinking of the flat area alongside the auto shift stick. I would appreciate any ideas from others experience, Thanks

I like that spot. I've got the Tekonsha Voyager ...

... but I know a lot of blokes chuck the Prodigy in the ash tray slot.

I had the Prodigy fitted yesterday and it sits on the underside of the dash at the extreme left on drivers side.

Was offered a choice of removable or fixed bracket and chose the former.

Had the Prodigy in the same position in 80 series and it did not get in the way and was in easy view while driving.

That's also one big advantage of the Prodigy over the Voyager. The Voyager has a much more restrictive range of fitting angles - from 20 degrees down to 70 degrees up - and then there's a bit of adjustement to set the level. The Prodigy, however, can be sat on it's head and not worry.

The Voyager also needs access to the adjustment dials on the sides - which makes the ashtray slot unsuitable for a fitting location (unless you've got the fingers of a specialist Toyota Yaris technician).

I mounted mine as low as it would go on the dash kick panel on the left hand side (opposite the fuse box if you know what I mean).

This is a perfect spot for me, it's out of the way, I never knock it, but I can easily reach down and activate the manual override. I can also glance down and see the braking output display figures through the bottom of the steering wheel.

Let me know if you want pictures and I'll snap some.

              Hi Pedro

Just installed my Prodigy in exactly the same spot today. Fits perfectly and can easily be removed to put the ashtray back in when not using it (not that I use the ashtray for anything).

              Cheers

By the way Pedro. In your picture, where does your GME3440 microphone lead go to??? A plug in the dash? Where is the base unit kept?

                  Michael,
There is a small piece taken out of bottom of blank beside the "2nd Start" button as shown below

Auto sparkie strapped it on somewhere under panel out of sight.

Mine is in the same spot for exactly the same reason.

Also having survived a jack-knife with our van (in a Verada with a pop-top) some years ago. I also realise that this position gives the passenger a chance to reach it if the driver can't (cause you're tied up trying to control the steering wheel which is whipping from lock to lock)

                      Hi Guys,

I am keen to mount my Tekonsha Prodigy in the ash tray area (D4D) but have found it is not a firm fit (even in it's plastic cradle) and looks like it will vibrate on a gravel road. Can you guys please tell me how you have secured it in the hole :?:

I used the metal bracket and unscrewed the mount for the ashtray.
You then use the same holes to mount the bracket.

This was a very solid position.

Sorry I don't have any photos but have removed the controller as I am selling the car.

                          Thanks Chuck,

I will get in to this weekend. Not looking forward to pulling up the door sills again and removing the rear plastic to run the brake light pickup and trailer wire. Oh well got to be better than gardening.

Thought that I would throw in my installation.

It is a pendulum type but an electronic type would also fit.

                              Chippy,
The Voyager fits in the ash tray as well. I happened to have a piece of aluminium channel lying around the garage, and obviously Murphy was sleeping because it fitted perfectly.

So I just made up some backets as shown.

                              and finally a close up.
