  • Tyre Size diff concern

    Hi Guys,

I have mis matched tyres on my prado at the moment. Kumhos with 85% on the front and grandtrecks with 40% on the rear.

I am aware this will run the centre diff a little bit all the time.

The question is should i be scared ? Or its not hugely important and i should just make sure when these tyres are worn out that i get a nice matched set.

    Cheers

    Stewart

    Re: Tyre Size diff concern

Are the tyres both 265/65 or do you have a set that are 265/70 and 265/65. If they are both the same and different wear rates then that is not as much of any issue. If they are different sizes then that is an issue and you should get them fixed straight away.

I am interested to hear a few more educated opinions on this. My understanding - at least of a 95 series TX with VSC etc - is that there is no LSD, and that the centre diff is open unless in low range or locked via button. If that is the case, does it mean that there is no mechanical conflict if a slightly smaller spare is used (eg 1 x 265/70/16, with 3 x 265/75/16)?

I would have thought that a slightly smaller tyre on one side would result in an effect on any differentials that is similar to the vehicle turning a very gradual corner, i.e. one travels further.

And/or is there an issue with the VSC detecting differing wheel speeds but no correlating steering position input and thinking that something is up, resulting is a light and sound extravaganza in the dash region?
