The instructions are very comprehensive. There is a poor quality black and white copy of the photo's document on their website, a printed sheet of instructions on how to remove and refit the axles and diff and a very detailed explanation of how to actually modify the diff centre itself.

OK, As this is my daily drive and I don't really have time to do it, can't get anywhere to get anything extra I need once it's apart plus plague of locusts, terrible flood etc (aka I wimped out). I've booked it in with a highly recommended local 4WD mechanic for next Thursday (30th June). He's fitted them before (front diffs only so not on a Prado). Quoted $400 including oil, gasket etc - seemed to be a pretty reasonable price.

$400 is probably money well spent considering that it will take the best part of a working day to accomplish.

That's what I was thinking plus if there are any problems it should be under warranty.

Will do Marc. I'm going out to play on 10th July so will be keen to see how it performs.

tassie - that roothy rendition was friggin hilarious...

My mate is getting a lokka on his challenger as it is part time 4wd... install will be in my driveway so will post it up when its done...

I hate the worry of leaving my lockers on and busting one - even to the point where im thinking of running led warnings on dash to let me know when they're on.

You do have hoses and fuses etc to worry about with them to go wrong. I'd be happy with a lokka in the rear if i didn't have an arb air locker already. Its cheap, reliable and once its in, there's minimal worries...

It all depends on dollars and what your using your truck for too as if you hav the cash and are going crazy places then get two arb lockers - i flicked them on the other day when a few guys were trying to get up a rocky hill and i was first one up... easy peasy... and yesterday my mate with 35inch muddies on a cruiser made it up a crazy boggy hill near my house easy. I didn't have a chance with all terains on 40 psi so i flicked on both lockers and i fourwheel spun up the hill!!! they are really out of this world...
Front and Rear ARB Air Lockers - Maxxis Bighorn 32inch M/Ts - Black 16x8 Sunrasias - Bilstein shocks - Lovells springs - Duel batteries - Ironman winch bar - Safari snorkel - Turbo timer - Boost guage - 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust - DP chip - Diff breathers - Custom Drawers - Towbar - Cargo barrier - HID spotties - Roof cage - Rear floodlight - Arb compressor - Garmin 1490T with Topos - 12000 Winch - Ozito chainsaw blah blah blah

Finally got the car back - apparently no dramas. Only driven it home so far (in the wet) and surprised by how loud the ticking is going round corners. Will get to drive it more tomorrow so will see how it goes.

OK, so I've had more of a chance to try it (on-road) and it's not as noticeable as I first thought. For normal driving you can't tell it's there - I'm guessing that normal road noise is louder than the clicking at speed.

When you are making tight turns at very slow speed (getting in and out of parking spaces, going round mini roundabouts, tight turns at junctions) you can hear a ticking noise. With the stereo on you probably wouldn't notice it. I had my 13YO daughter with me this morning and the only time she commented on the ticking was when I was turning into a parking spot and she didn't have her iPod on. She didn't know I had fitted the Lokka so wouldn't have been listening for it.

Be interesting to see how it goes off-road next Sunday.

I think I was just over sensitive last night.

I've used the Lokka off-road now and I must say I'm very impressed. Although we didn't do anything too extreme there were a few points where some of the guys had opposing wheels off the ground. I know mine lifted a back wheel a few times.

There were times I was aware that the Lokka was doing it's stuff particularly on loose gravel.

On-road I barely notice the ticking noise especially if the radio is on.

Overall I'm very glad I had this fitted and would do it again without question.

Hey trekrider, thanks for the update.
Has your on road driving style changed at all? Like most, I’m curious to know how your right foot now is used to go around round-abouts as well as turning at a set of traffic lights?
Doesn’t the lokka work that when you have the power applied that the diff is locked? So does this mean if you are under throttle and turning that both rear wheels are traveling at the same speed and effectively loading up the diff or causing the tyres to scuff?
Im not too fussed about the disengaging sound (clicking), but I am worried it may place pressure on components if my driving style is not changed.

Hi Switched, no problem. I don't think I have changed driving style much, I perhaps don't put my foot down as much in these situations. When making tight turns at slow speed it does tick a lot and putting my foot down doesn't really change that. I believe the idea is the outside wheel is allowed to run faster as the inside wheel is driven. Going round small roundabouts the ticking continues in the turn even when I power out of the turn so I guess there is very little scrubbing of the outside wheel.

To be honest my driving style changed far more going from a regular car (with someone else paying for fuel) to driving a 4WD (with me paying for the fuel)

Switched - I don't think its designed to lock under torque (putting your foot down). It unlocks under opposing forces like when cornering. Theoretically, even if you put your foot down, these forces should still disengage the lokka, or at least that's how I read it....

I've got these Auto Lockers in my little Suzuki Bush basher and they are great, but u do have to be aware of your driving style. The Lockers are "locked" all the time and "unlock" when cornering is required but only when u are "not" under heavy acceleration. You either coaster or apply small amt of acceleration going around corners, if u apply too much acceleration, then they "will" lock up, no that's a bit issue.

For constant 4WD's like Prado's, it's even a less of an issue as u will find most of the drive will be directed to the Front Wheels anyhow via the Centre Diff. You won't even notice a thing...... but, if u had to remove your Front Drive-shaft for some reason (ie: not sure if this is possible on the Prados like it is on the 105's/80's Cruisers) then u will notice it big-time (U have to have your Centre Diff lock button engaged for this to work). A mate of mine has this setup in his 80's and didn't notice any difference in driving until he had to remove his front shaft to have it balanced.... then driving around just with the Rear Shaft in and the Centre Diff-lock button engaged, this is when he noticed the difference in driving.....

I would certainly consider one in my Prado.... when it comes out of warranty though.....
cheers..... Rob (macca)

Thanks Rob for clarifying - i was pretty sure I read that they were constantly locked, and only unlocked when not using any right foot, but you are probably right when you say "just not much right foot" so to say. Hence the Q's about teh cornering at traffic lights etc.
After much deliberation I've decided to NOT to install a ARB locker due to the issues with the O rings. Plus I would need to buy another compressor for it and then resell my bushranger max air. I suspect I wont be ever installing a front locker - just too many other things on the top of my priority list.
The only think causing me hesitation with the Lokka and lockrite was merely having the better half driving on road and not remembering/understanding the driving style needs to be changed - If those out there say its negligible (and will verify with 4wd systems) then I still may go down this road (preferable off road )
