5 Speed Auto not holding/sticking in 4th gear

Hi,

I recently purchased a 2005, 4.0l petrol with 5 speed auto, primarily to use as a tow vehicle.

I rang Toyota and asked for their recommendation on towing gear and was advised to use 4th on the 5 speed auto.

The problem I have is that my car will not shift and stay in 4th. I have asked Toyota who don't seem to be sure about it, so I thought I would ask people who drive and know the car.

When I shift from the D position across into 4th, should the shifter stay in the new position and hold 4th gear ? (seems like such a stupid ? so apologies in advance)

If I move the shifter across into 4th, the 4 lights up on the dash, but as soon as I let go of the shifter, it springs back to D and D lights up on the dash.

Is something wrong with my transmission ?

Sounds like the shifter is broken, plastic bit that holds the selector over. If you search you can find out more info. If you have only just brought the car from a dealer take it back for repairs before your warranty runs out...

Yep. Sounds like a broken shifter. When moved to the right the shifter should remain there and the transmission not shift above 4th grear.
Normally it is not too expensive to fix. Just a spring or retainer.

Thanks Guys,

The prado is booked in for repair with the dealer next week.

There is also quite alot of play in the shifter and I suspected that the T-Bar bushes had needed replacing, but clearly something more is going on..
