  • Not driving at all !!!

Good morning, maybe somebody can help me with my Prado, suddenly it stopt driving in D and all lower gears, also no Reverse. Even when I rev. it does not kick in / start moving. I did check the level of the ATF fluid, but this is OK. I brought it to the dealership, they told me the transmission needs to be changed ?? Could it be the torq converter or very dirty ATF filter ( no circulation of oil ) ? What kind of test can I do ?

Has the 4wd selector been knocked into the 'N' position for neutral?

Good call. This happened to my wife once.

Shame that the first post is looking for help and not an introduction. Seems to be happening a lot lately.

        Thanks for the two reply's

I am sorry I did not introduce myself. I thought this is a technical forum, not for socializing. The Car is in 4 WD High or Low, NOT in Neutral. This morning I tried again to drive it, I noticed it only was going to move / drive when I gave more throttle ( about 2500 RPM ), but this worked only once or twice, then it stopped driving at all, not in D / R. Maybe this helps to analyze the problem.

Was it toyo you took it to and said the transmission needs replacing?

I don't really know much about the transmission, but could it be your handbrake shoes/brakes are binding/stuck???? Could firstly try and jack it up and see whether wheels move freely without issue.

Clutching (no pun intended) at straws.

That's a very good point. Did you by any chance wash the car day before this happened? It is a known fact that the hand brake drums would hold water and bind to the hand brake shoes if left overnight without driving it to get rid of the water. Would be good to know what happened as this was a few weeks ago now.
            Cheers

I fixed it without help from this forum !! Let me explain what we did : We drained the atf, installed a new atf filter, 6 bottle's Dexon III regular Atf oil. Let it circulate for 1 hour. Flushed the complete system, again drained all, again new Atf filter and new atf IV toyota oil ( expensive ). And now it is driving perfectly.

I don't quite know what to make of that reply?

Was the oil black/dirty and have alot of fine grainy particles to it? Did it smell burnt?

Hi. This problem just happened to me this morning. Had it happen a couple of weeks ago on rough gravel track but thought she just got knocked out of gear (there was a loud bang) Turned the car off, turned it back on and away we went. Went to reverse this morning from garage, no movement, put it into drive no movement, put back into park. Put back into reverse no movement, back to park, then back into reverse then a bang sound, then away she went. Could it be electronic?

As far as Mipos is concerned you should be able to fix this without help from any of us :sarcasm:

Seriously, i would start at the auto and check the fluid - colour, level, smell, particles of crap?
A mate of mine got his auto serviced the other week for $180 and was extremely happy with the outcome of the service. It now behaves as an auto should

I am considering doing mine as it is playing up a little bit, not enough to be overly concerned but if $180 sorts it out i would be happy. Having said that, both our cars are 9 years old and expect to do a bit of maintenance. It's a real pity to read about the issues the 150 is having

it's usually pretty good, sometimes it's a bit clunky. not too good for a 5 week old car though. will have it looked at at the 10,000k service next week.
