  • Question..... Would a Detroit Locker be a better option in the rear?? I have a mate that has one in his 80series & u can't even hear it working at all. The only time u could hear it was when he removed the front driveshaft to try and find a vibration that he was getting, then u could hear the click-click as u turned corners.....At least u wouldn't have to remember to turn it on b4 attempting any steep hills......
Not sure even if they are available or not..... does anyone have one installed??

      Better option? In what reguard
A auto locker isn't going to make the diff stronger when compared to a selectable locker (ie-air or e locker)

A locker does put less loads on the centre by sharing loads across both axles and there is less need to drive things with speed but rather carefully being able to crawl it.

Auto lockers do however at times shock load axles and things when they are on high traction surfaces (ie road) and are half way between staying locked and unlocking.. Really all depends on what you do with the car.

If you tow your better off having a selectable locker so its gone on road and you can choose when to use it when needed, that way your not putting any extra added stress on the driveline..

      • I have just finished reading all of this thread and it seems these diffs are still a problem. I'm a bit concerned as I haven't done any real off road driving in my 2005 VX yet and I would like to avoid this breakage if I can.

How are the Nitro gears working out for those that have gone that way?

Are there any suppliers in Australia or is it better to order direct from the US?

Superior Engineering or Locktup4x4 sell Nitro gears. Locktup will probably be cheaper. But you might find you can get them cheaper direct from the US. If you're not going to do it yourself, I'd also get a quote for installation.

            • Add me to the club. Only had my grande for 4 weeks towing my boat on the beach camping and bang. Was a rough trip home. Complete assembly from japan. 3 weeks later got her back again. All under warranty.

                • It only the standard diff centre , I've been looking at the Nitro crown and pinion ,are they any stronger than the standard diff ?.
Is anyone using the nitro crown & pinion (what do you think of them)
Because I'm running 33" tyres should I change the ratio ? (What ratio )
Can I change the ratio in the transfer case only so when in 4wd it's geared down and when on the tar I've still have the same

                    • I needed to know diff ratios when I had my Lockers fitted, I just called Toyota with the year and model and they told me over the phone within a few seconds. Never wrote it down though so cant remember.

                      Cheers Andrew

You can calculate/confirm it on vehicle. Mark the pinion flange and tyre and count the turns. Obviously you'll need to do it with your front diff as you've already removed the ring gear.

The Nitro's are far stronger. You can re-gear to allow for your tyres. You'll have to calculate what ratio you need to get back to the original final drive ratio before you fitted the 33's and then get that or the closest available ratio.
There isn't anything available to change the transfer case ratios in a Prado chain driven transfer case.
Make sure you also buy the master install kit with the solid pinion spacer and shims, not one with a crush sleeve.
