Having picked up my new D4D 2 weeks ago I was disappointed to find that the clutch shudders slightly when taking off in 1st gear. It has done this since I picked it up. I will bring it to the attention of the dealer at my "complimentary" inspection, but would like to know if others have found this to be a characteristic of the vehicle. Otherwise it is really sweet.

The clutch on my '04 prado has shuddered since new. Toyota have checked and said nothing wrong!!!
Clutch is now very noisy (squealing) when engaged as well as shuddering (shudder worse when cold or raining)Sold the Prado. Now FJ Cruiser -
I don't like your chances of getting it fixed. Clutches always seem to perform to 'acceptable levels'... much to the owner's frustration.Comment

I will be taking the car to Toyota Service tomorrow as it is getting worse.
I have made sure the problem has been recorded and I have copies of the service reports.

It actually seems to have settled down after 5,000km. Its still not as strong feeling as my old 90 series clutch, but I have learned how to take off on a light throttle which almost eliminates any shudder. I will still bring it up at the 10k service, but I don't hold out much hope of them admitting a problem.07 GX D4D Manual, Option Pack 1Comment

Took my car to the local (only one in town!) Toyota Service department to check on the shudder & noise.
Advised the squarking noise is normal and is due to using non-asbestos linings.
As I have the same problem with lift brakes, this would be an acceptable diagnosis.
Of course, there was no shudder in the clutch today........Sold the Prado. Now FJ CruiserComment

Clutch Shudder!!! I have a 2003 Petrol 5spd Manual and have this exact same problem. The clutch is functioning such that it is almost impossible to avoid the vehicle shuddering when taking off in 1st gear. As per above, it is also worst when cold. Feels like I am a teenager learning to drive again with the occasional kangaroo hops at times.
Is this normal for the 5spd manuals (Have not driven another)?
Has anyone found a solution for this? New clutch?
I am concerned about the strain these jerky starts may be placing on the rest of the drive train.Comment

I am pleased to say that my clutch has settled down considerably now that I have 20k on the clock. Either it has got better or my driving style has changed. I am hoping it will stay that way as it still doesn't feel like a very strong clutch to me.07 GX D4D Manual, Option Pack 1Comment

i brought new prado at the start of the year and it to had a shudder in the cluch when taking off from a start. i first thorught it was me and i tryed charging way i tell the cluch out. took it to toyota campbelltown, "yes theres a problem, we'll have to replace the hole cluch" havent had a problem since.Comment

Clutch shudder is normal?? I really don't think so. In the limited situations that I've seen / experienced clutch shudder or slip, it's almost always been an incorrect or bad (faulty) clutch plate fitted, or a case of flywheel machining required. There is no reason a clutch should shudder on takeoff as part of normal operation. Modern clutch systems are better than that, or at least, they should be if all "anti-shock" components etc work as they should.

Just to liven up an old thred
I had a new clutch last year it shuddered on light take off in 1st
Worse when cold. It also had a noisy thrust bearing untill you loaded the bearing
Just replaced it again to fix the 2 problems
Slowly the shudder came back
There were no hot spots on fly.
It was machined both times.
Exedy clutch kits=not impressed to say the least.
What else can cause a clutch shudder?
I read here somewhere about clutch mAster or slave causing this?

I have the same issue. Had my clutch replaced at 80,000 just after I purchased the prado. It shudders when taking off, slowly releasing the clutch, but worse when reverse is engaged and especially up a hill. I don't believe it is the clutch anymore and am leaning more towards maybe an engine mount that might be u/s. From reading a few of the comments others have made it sounds very similar.

This is the story of my Prado.
My clutch is at exedy now getting tested.
It has done 4000klms.
The previous one shuddered the same it had done 11,000klms
They knocked the warranty on the first one because of some dust and mud splashed on the clutch cover - (big air holes in housing).
This one is still clean, we will see if they do the right thing, the easy or hard way.Comment

My 2008 D4D has started to develop a shudder from take-off. If I hold the revs around 1750-2000 it is ok but below that it is quite severe. There has been talk of potential issues with engine mounts, does anyone have experience of failing engine mounts causing engine shuddering. It is worth noting the shudder does not happen in reverse.Comment
