  • Auto changing up when not needed.

    I have a v6 petrol 2007 auto. Most of my driving is dunes. When climbing large dunes one needs to hold 2nd or 3rd gear to reach the top.

    Yesterday at relatively gentle dune, which had a longish climb, I was in 3rd gear, but the auto kept changing up into forth around 5k RPM, and then drop down. The change kept making me loose my momentum and had to attempt the dune 3 times.

    I assume that the ECU is thinking it knows best and protecting my driveline from over revving, but we need it for our terrain out here, any thoughts.

    I also have a 2nd start button?

    Simple answer is to select 2nd or 3rd gear manually, the auto will still take of in 1st gear, or 2nd if 2nd start button is used but it will not change past the highest selected gear.

      as Andrew said, 2nd and 3rd gear is the mageic word, last friday i was driving in soft sand and dunes , tried all the gears, and settles on 2/rrd gear, and the transmition temp was 80c degrees.

        sorry gents, I was in the selected gears, but it would still change up when nearing redline. But I did experiment with the 2nd start button, and stays in all the selected gears until changed by the driver. Also the same for the 1st gear as well.

          That's odd. Mine will bounce off the rev limiter and not shift.
          2004 Prado GXL. v6 auto, ARB deluxe bar, exhaust, 2" EFS lift kit, Outback Acc rear bar,

            Maybe the overseas models are differnt to ours? but it seems strange that it will shift above the selected gear, sort of defeats the purpose of being able to select a gear. You may have a fault somewhere in the system as well.

              Maybe the overseas models are differnt to ours?
              mine is an overseas model , actually it should be the same as the one in Dubai, and it stayed in 2nd or 3rd.

                    The overseas model may be different. I will check today but I think if you're about the bash the redline in the 150 it changes. This is definitely the case in the aurion.
