Wheel Bearings

This was picked up after I broke to crown and pinion on the Prado.
As you can see water has leaked in through the seals some where near the wheels not thru the breather.
Replacement cost per bearing will be $600.00 per wheel.
It has a sensor built in for the brake system on the bearing and they can’t remove the bearing without damaging the rubber sensor pick up. Just what I need on top of the cost of the replacement crown and pinion at $1700 .

Far out Russ - you're not having a great run with this one.

Is the water visible in the diff oil at all, or does it stay trapped in the wheel bearings and just stuff them up ???

No the muck is only visible if you pull out the axles,My diff oil was only changed 4000 km ago when the 80000km service was done.It wouldn't have been detectable unless the the axels come out.The problem is we don't no for sure how it got there yet.At $600 per wheel bearing most people don't check them to offen.In fact,Toyota don't even stock them in Australia.
Ex Japan for one of the sides and the other is in stock.The inside of the diff was clean as a whisle and the diff breather hasn't leaked.I use a pressure spray to clean the car after a day out a wonder if they may be the cause.
I wonder if Toyota could explain how this could happen to a car which is only 84000km old.
I hope no-one else finds this problem as it apears to be unusual.

Ps I also asked him has he done any work on gear boxes ect
He has done a few transfer cases where the driver has left the car in 4wd and driven off on the road,wound up the transfer case damaged it to the point of $3 to $4000.
Thats cheaper that blowning a diff.

Mine's just had it's 80,000 service (I'm at about 85,000 Km now) and they changed the oils - no dramas there - but there's no way of knowing if water has gotten into the bearings unless you pull the axles out and take a peak.

I was looking at the diff breathers today - and they're pathetic - so I'm about to chuck in some new breathers / filters (and fix them up high in the engine bay) but that wouldn't help in this case.

I wonder how hard it is to pop the axle out and take a peek ??

As for driving off in 4wd - yep, I've done it. Pull out of the dirt and onto the blacktop - take off and trundle along at 80 or 90 kph for 5 or 6 K's before I saw the little light on the dash winking at me. I've no idea how long you would need to be driving for before you start to do some damage ???

going by the rusty mating surface of the axle plate it looks like this may of been letting the water in, generally you see some rusty spots there, but not the whole surface rusted.

And its worth remembering, no part is unbreakable, ever, and for a small cost in comparison, some changes can be made which make the diff as strong as it can be, and before anyone says "you shouldnt have to, yada yada, fixing the diffs is no different to changing to proper 4wd tyres for your intended purpose, changing the suspension to suit your intended purpose, etc, etc.

Chippy, re the diff breathers. I just extended my rear breather on the weekend, i bought the piranha kit from arb. i ran the breather cable up in behind the rear passenger tail light, if you look into where your jack is there is a rubber grommet where i ran the breather line up through and gave it a good whack of silastic afterwards.

As for the front diff i found out there is allready a breather running up into the engine bay as far as i can see, as i took all the bash plates of the front and its awfully tight around the front diff, but if you look there is what appears to be a part solid pipe and hose arrangement going up into the engine bay wich ends with the same style breather on the end as what used to be on the rear.

When you fit the breather chuck up some photos,A bit of a how to type of thing.As for the axles,It looks like 4 bolts hold it together after you remove all the brake gear.

Hopefully i'll get it back with one side of the wheel bearing replaced tomorrow.20/9/07
I will have to wait 3 weeks to get the other wheel bearings done as it is ex japan.More money
Tuesday its booked in to get the compressor and switches hooked up for the locker to work just in time for the long week-end as i'm going down to Wellington Dam with a small crew to test it out.
I'll let you know what happens.
Hopefully Toyota can find me a wheel Bearing faster and give me an Idea why it leaked in the first place.
Its getting there.
